Kyoto or Osaka? An honest comparison
The short answer
Pick Kyoto for temples, gardens, traditional streets and a slower, more refined stay; it is the cultural heart of a Japan trip. Pick Osaka for street food, nightlife, shopping and easier transport, and as a cheaper base with more hotels; on our numbers it is slightly cheaper. They are so close that most travellers should sleep in one and day-trip to the other.
Kyoto: suits couples, families and first-timers who want shrines, temples, gardens and traditional inns.
Osaka: suits friends, solo travellers and food lovers who want street food, neon nights and an easy transport hub.

Common questions
Is Kyoto or Osaka cheaper?
Osaka is slightly cheaper on our numbers: about ¥21,200 (€119) per person per day at mid-range against about ¥21,700 (€122) in Kyoto. The difference is mostly accommodation: Osaka has many more business hotels, while Kyoto's ryokan and central hotels fill fast in spring and autumn. Street food in Osaka also makes cheap meals very easy.
Should I stay in Kyoto or Osaka?
Stay in Kyoto if temples are your priority, because you can reach the big sights early before the crowds arrive. Stay in Osaka if you want nightlife, cheaper hotels and easy transport, and day-trip to Kyoto. With four nights or more, splitting the stay between both is the best option, and the trains make changing hotels painless.
How long does it take to get between Kyoto and Osaka?
About 30 minutes on JR Special Rapid trains between Kyoto Station and Osaka Station. The private Hankyu line runs between central Kyoto and Umeda in around 45 minutes, and the Keihan line serves Gion. The shinkansen to Shin-Osaka takes about 15 minutes but costs more. All are frequent, so there is no need to book.
When is the best time to visit Kyoto and Osaka?
October and November are ideal for both, with comfortable temperatures and autumn colours in Kyoto's temples, though late November is very busy. Spring cherry blossom season is beautiful but crowded and expensive. July and August are hot and humid, with highs around 32°C, so plan temple visits early in the day.
