Common questions

Is Barcelona or Rome cheaper?

Rome, a little. Our mid-range estimate is about €172 per person per day in Rome against about €196 in Barcelona. Rooms and dinners cost slightly less in Rome, while both cities add tourist taxes to hotel bills. Eating where locals eat, away from La Rambla or the Pantheon, saves money in both.

Which is better for a short city break?

For three days, both work well. Barcelona is easier logistically with its metro, and you can mix sights with beach time. Rome has more essential sights to fit in, so three days can feel rushed; four is better. Choose Barcelona for variety and relaxation, Rome for history density.

When is the best time to visit?

For Rome, September and October are the best months: warm without the summer heat of around 34°C. Barcelona is comfortable from April to November, with July around 29°C and good beach weather from June to September. Both cities are crowded in summer; May and October are a good compromise.

How do I get from Barcelona to Rome?

Flying is quickest: about 1 h 45 in the air, with many daily departures. For a slow alternative, overnight ferries run from Barcelona to Civitavecchia, about 20 hours, with Rome about an hour away by train. Check current schedules, as ferry timetables vary by season.
