Events worth planning around
- Easter (March or April): Holy Week services and the Pope's Easter Mass in St Peter's Square, with the year's largest crowds
- Natale di Roma, the city's birthday, on 21 April, with historical parades
- Festa della Repubblica on 2 June, with a military parade on Via dei Fori Imperiali
- Feast of Saints Peter and Paul on 29 June, Rome's patron saints' day (a local holiday)
- Ferragosto on 15 August, when many Romans leave and some restaurants close
When to avoid
July and August are hot (32–34°C average highs, sometimes far more) for walking through ruins with little shade, and Easter week is extremely crowded and expensive. If you can, avoid the days around major Vatican events unless you are going for them.
