Barcelona or Madrid? An honest comparison

The short answer

Pick Barcelona for Gaudí, a beach in the city and Mediterranean summer; pick Madrid for art museums, tapas bars and some of Europe's latest nights. Madrid is cheaper on mid-range numbers (€166 vs €196 per person per day). If it's your first Spain trip and you have only one city, Barcelona's sights are more distinctive; Madrid is the better place to live like a local.

Barcelona: suits couples, friends and photographers who want striking architecture, beach time and a lively seafront city.

Madrid: suits friends, solo travellers and art lovers who want museums, tapas crawls and late nights.

Common questions

Is Barcelona or Madrid cheaper?

Madrid is cheaper on mid-range numbers: about €166 per person per day versus €196 in Barcelona. The gap shows mainly in hotel rates and drinks. Madrid's main museums also have free entry slots in the evenings, while Barcelona's top sights, especially Sagrada Família and Park Güell, carry fairly high ticket prices.

How long is the train from Barcelona to Madrid?

The high-speed train takes about 2 h 30 on the fastest services and around 3 h 10 with stops. Several companies now compete on the line, so fares can be low if you book early. It runs centre to centre, which usually beats flying once airport time is counted. Check current timetables.

Which is better in summer?

Barcelona. Madrid is inland and reaches about 35°C in July, with hot nights. Barcelona peaks around 29°C and has the sea for swimming, although it's humid and very crowded. For Madrid, aim for April, May, September or October, when walking between museums and terraces is far more pleasant.

Which has better nightlife?

Madrid for sheer stamina: dinner after 10 pm, bars until 3 am and clubs until morning, on most nights of the week. Barcelona has excellent beach bars, cocktail bars in El Born and large clubs along the waterfront, but its centre is more tourist-oriented. Madrid feels more local.
