Bangkok or Tokyo? An honest comparison

The short answer

Pick Bangkok for heat, temples, street food and nightlife at lower prices. Pick Tokyo for precision, safety, endless neighbourhoods and some of the best food in the world, at a higher daily cost: about €136 mid-range in Tokyo against about 4,000 baht in Bangkok, which is clearly less at current exchange rates.

Bangkok: suits first-timers to Asia, friends and solo travellers who want street food, markets, temples and late nights on a smaller budget.

Tokyo: suits solo travellers, couples and photographers who want a safe, efficient city with outstanding food and very varied districts.

Common questions

Is Bangkok or Tokyo cheaper?

Bangkok. Our mid-range estimate is about 4,000 baht per person per day there, against about €136 (24,200 yen) in Tokyo, and the baht figure is clearly lower at current exchange rates. Street food in Bangkok costs very little, while hotels are the biggest expense in Tokyo. Tokyo still offers fair value for its quality, especially at lunch.

How far apart are Bangkok and Tokyo?

About 4,600 km. A direct flight takes roughly 6 hours to Tokyo and a little less on the way back, plus airport time. That makes a combined trip realistic only if you have at least 10 to 12 days. With a week, choose one city and add a nearby side trip instead.

When is the best time to visit?

Tokyo is at its best in November in our data, with autumn colours and mild days; spring cherry blossom is also popular. Bangkok is hot all year, around 31 to 33°C; the cooler, drier months are roughly November to February, while March and April are the hottest. A November trip suits both cities.

Which is better for a first trip to Asia?

Tokyo is easier: it is safe, clean and the transport is simple, even if you speak no Japanese. Bangkok is more chaotic but very welcoming, cheaper and full of street life, and it makes a good gateway to the rest of Southeast Asia. Choose Tokyo for comfort, Bangkok for energy and budget.
