Is Puerto Rico safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Most visitors to Puerto Rico's tourist areas — Old San Juan, Condado, Isla Verde, El Yunque and the beaches — have trouble-free trips. Puerto Rico does have a high crime rate, but it mostly involves drug-related violence in specific neighbourhoods rather than tourists. The realistic risks are petty theft, car break-ins, rip currents and hurricane season.
The real risks
Car break-ins
Thefts from rental cars at beaches, El Yunque car parks and viewpoints are common. Leave nothing in the car.
Rip currents
Atlantic beaches on the north coast can have strong currents on windy days. Swim at sheltered beaches such as Luquillo and Flamenco, and follow flags and local advice.
Petty theft
Bag and phone theft happen in busy nightlife areas and on beaches. Do not leave belongings unattended.
Hurricanes and storms
The season runs June to November, with the highest risk from August to October. Follow official alerts and keep flexible plans.
Power and water outages
Outages still occur on the island. Keep a charged power bank and some water, and check your hotel has a generator.
Areas and times to take care
Old San Juan, Condado, Ocean Park, Isla Verde and the main towns visitors go to are generally fine, including in the evening on busy streets. Take more care late at night around La Perla, the neighbourhood just outside Old San Juan's walls, which visitors should not enter without a local, and in quiet streets in Santurce after the nightlife ends. Ask your hotel for local advice.
Getting around safely
Uber works well in San Juan and is the easiest way to get around at night. Outside the capital, rent a car; public buses are limited. Roads can be congested and potholed, and drivers can be aggressive, so drive defensively and avoid unlit rural roads at night.
Solo and women travellers
Many solo women visit Puerto Rico, especially San Juan, without problems. Catcalling can happen. Use Uber at night, avoid empty beaches after dark, watch your drink in bars at La Placita and in Condado, and choose well-reviewed tours for bio bays and islands.
Health, water and heat
Tap water is treated and generally safe in San Juan, but many visitors drink bottled water, especially after storms. Dengue occurs, so use insect repellent. The sun is strong all year, with temperatures around 27–31°C; drink plenty of water.
