Is Puerto Rico expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Puerto Rico costs about the same as a mid-priced US destination: cheaper than Hawaii or the US Virgin Islands, but more expensive than the Dominican Republic or Mexico. Plan on about US$130 a day per person on a budget, US$305 mid-range and US$670 for comfort. Hotels with their taxes and resort fees, car hire and tours take most of the money; local food at kioskos and the Old San Juan forts are good value.

Where the money goes
Accommodation is the main cost: hotels in Old San Juan and Condado cost US$180–320 a night, and room taxes of roughly 7–11% and resort fees are added. A rental car is needed outside San Juan, adding US$40–70 a day plus fuel and tolls. Tours — bio bays, snorkelling and El Yunque trips — add US$50–100 each. Food varies widely: sit-down restaurants in tourist areas charge mainland US prices plus 11.5% sales tax and tips, while kioskos and local cafeterias are cheap.
When it is cheaper
Late April to November is the low season, with hotel rates often noticeably lower than from mid-December to mid-April. The cheapest months fall within the hurricane season (June to November), so get flexible bookings and travel insurance.
How to spend less
- Use the free trolley in Old San Juan and walk the rest.
- Eat at kioskos (food stalls) in Luquillo and Piñones and at local cafeterias, where meals cost a fraction of restaurant prices.
- Take the public ferry to Culebra or Vieques instead of a catamaran day tour.
- Hire a car only for the days you leave San Juan; use Uber in the city.
- Book El Yunque reservations and ferry tickets on the official sites.
- Compare total hotel prices including room tax and resort fees.
