Is Milos safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Milos is a very safe island with little crime. The realistic risks are on the coast: cliff edges and rock jumping at Sarakiniko and Kleftiko, quad and scooter accidents on dirt roads, and strong meltemi winds in summer. Theft is rare.
The real risks
Cliff jumping and edges
Sarakiniko's white rocks and the Kleftiko arches tempt jumpers; check water depth and stay back from unstable edges.
Quads and scooters
Unpaved roads to beaches such as Tsigrado and Kleftiko viewpoints are rough; wear a helmet and drive slowly.
Meltemi wind
In July and August strong north winds can make beaches on the north coast dangerous and cancel boat trips.
Sun and heat
Sarakiniko and other white-rock beaches have no shade; bring water, hats and sunscreen.
Rope access beaches
Tsigrado is reached by a ladder and rope; skip it if unsure.
Areas and times to take care
There are no areas to avoid. Take care at the moonscape of Sarakiniko, in the sea caves on boat trips and on unpaved roads in the western part of the island, which are better with a 4x4 or on foot.
Getting around safely
Taxis are few, so book ahead in summer. Buses link Adamas with Plaka, Pollonia and some beaches. If driving, watch for narrow village roads and loose gravel; do not drink and drive.
Solo and women travellers
Milos is very comfortable for women travelling alone. Normal precautions apply in bars; tell someone your plans before driving to remote beaches.
Health, water and heat
Tap water is often desalinated and not recommended for drinking; buy bottled water. Sun is intense and shade scarce. There is a health centre on the island; serious cases go to Athens, so travel insurance is important.
