Is Lesbos safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Lesbos is very safe, with low crime and a relaxed pace. The realistic risks are long drives on winding roads, summer heat at exposed sites such as the Petrified Forest, and wildfire danger in hot, windy weather.

The real risks

Winding roads

Distances are long and roads wind through the hills; drive slowly, take breaks and avoid driving tired at night.

Heat

July and August reach about 34°C; the Petrified Forest park has very little shade, so go in the morning.

Steep lanes

Molyvos and Petra's 114 steps are steep and cobbled; wear good shoes.

Hot springs

At Eftalou, the water is very hot; follow the bathhouse guidance and limit time in it.

Wildfire risk

On hot, windy days follow fire warnings and never light fires outdoors.

Sea conditions

The north coast can be windy; choose sheltered beaches when the wind is up.

Areas and times to take care

There are no areas to avoid. Mytilene's harbour and Ermou Street are busy in the evening, and the villages are very quiet at night.

Getting around safely

KTEL buses are safe but run only a few times a day. Taxis are available in Mytilene and larger villages; agree the fare for long trips. A car is the practical choice, driven with care.

Solo and women travellers

Lesbos is comfortable for solo women, with low crime and a long-standing welcoming scene in Skala Eresou. Plan transport in advance, as buses are infrequent and distances are long.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is generally treated, but many visitors drink bottled water. Heat and sun are the main summer risks. Mytilene has a general hospital; travel insurance is recommended.

Emergency: 112 for all emergencies; 100 police, 166 ambulance, 199 fire, 108 coastguard.
