Is Lesbos expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Lesbos is good value for a Greek island: a budget day is about €65 per person and a mid-range day about €130, including a share of a rental car. It is cheaper than the Cyclades because Mytilene is a working university town and the island is large and not dominated by tourism; the main cost is driving its long, winding roads.

Where the money goes
Transport is the biggest cost: the island is large, Molyvos is about 1h15 from Mytilene and Sigri about 2 hours, so a car and fuel add up. Rooms are moderate at about €40–70 a double in Mytilene and €60–130 in Molyvos, Petra, Sigri or Skala Eresou. Food is good value in ouzeris, and museums cost a few euros each; fish priced by weight is the one item to watch.
When it is cheaper
May, early June and late September to October are usually cheaper than July–August, often by roughly 20–30% for rooms and cars. Mytilene stays open in winter, but many hotels in Molyvos and Eresos close from November to April.
How to spend less
- Use two bases, Mytilene and Molyvos or Petra, to cut long daily drives.
- Order ouzo by the small bottle at an ouzeri, where each round comes with small plates.
- Buy ouzo and olive oil at the distilleries or supermarkets, where prices are lower than in Athens.
- Ask the price per kilo before ordering fish.
- Stay in Mytilene for the lowest room rates and year-round tavernas.
- Book the car early for July and August, when Greek visitors arrive.
