Is Bodrum safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Bodrum is a safe holiday destination with low crime against visitors. The realistic risks are drink-related problems in the nightlife strips, petty theft on crowded beaches, overcharging, and the summer heat and road traffic. Violent crime against tourists is rare.
The real risks
Drinks and nightlife
On the bar street (Cumhuriyet Caddesi) and in Gümbet, watch your drink, stay with friends and agree prices for drinks in clubs. Avoid the cheapest party boats if you want calm.
Overcharging
Fish by weight, unpriced menus and taxis can lead to surprise bills. Ask prices first and check the bill.
Beach theft
Bags and phones left on sunbeds can disappear on busy beaches. Keep valuables in the hotel safe.
Road traffic
Peninsula roads are narrow and busy in August. Drive carefully, take care on scooters and use crossings.
Heat and sun
July and August often reach 34°C or more. Drink water, use sunscreen and avoid long walks at midday.
Areas and times to take care
Bodrum town, the marina and the villages are generally safe day and night. The busiest late-night areas are the bar street in the eastern bay and the clubs of Gümbet, which run past 3:00; be careful there after midnight, mainly because of alcohol and crowds. Stay in the western bay or the villages if you want a quiet night.
Getting around safely
Dolmuş minibuses are safe and cheap, and run until about midnight in summer. Taxis are metered but expensive; ask your hotel or restaurant to call one. Rental cars and scooters are useful for the peninsula, but traffic is heavy in high season and parking in villages costs extra. Water taxis link some bays in summer.
Solo and women travellers
Bodrum is one of the most relaxed places in Turkey for solo women, with a cosmopolitan, resort atmosphere. Expect some persistent attention from touts and in nightlife areas; a firm no usually ends it. Use registered taxis late at night, and dress more modestly if you visit mosques or inland villages.
Health, water and heat
Tap water is treated but most people drink bottled water. The summer sun and heat are the main health concern, with highs of 33-35°C in July and August. Private clinics and hospitals in Bodrum are good but expensive, so take travel insurance. Watch for sea urchins on rocky shores.
