Bodrum on a budget: how to do it well
Short answer
Bodrum on a budget is possible but takes discipline in high season: allow about ₺3,500 per person per day for a shared pension room, simple food, one paid sight or beach and the dolmuş. Visiting in June or September makes the same money go noticeably further.

Free things to do
- Walk up to the restored windmills between Bodrum and Gümbet for sunset.
- Wade across the shallow channel to Rabbit Island (Tavşan Adası) at Gümüşlük.
- Swim from the free public stretches of sand at Bitez and Ortakent.
- Walk the harbour and the Milta marina promenade in the evening.
- Look out over both bays from the area around the Ancient Theatre (check whether the site itself charges entry).
- Browse the Bodrum market near the bus station on Tuesdays and Fridays.
Cheap eats
- Gözleme or pide from a village stall or bakery, usually a few hundred lira.
- Döner or köfte wrap in Bodrum town's back streets, a few hundred lira.
- Home-style dishes at a lokanta (pay for what you choose from the counter), roughly ₺300-600.
- Picnic of bread, cheese, olives and fruit from the Tuesday and Friday market.
- Simit and tea for breakfast from a street seller or çay bahçesi.
Where to sleep for less
Budget travellers stay in small pensions in the back streets of Bodrum town, within walking distance of the castle and the otogar, at about ₺2,500-4,500 for a double in high season. Bitez and the western bay are slightly pricier but quieter. Prices fall sharply outside July and August.
Getting around cheaply
Dolmuş minibuses from the Bodrum otogar run to every village for ₺50-90 a ride. From Milas-Bodrum Airport, 36 km away, Havaş buses take about 45 minutes and cost much less than a taxi (₺1,500-2,000). Walk within Bodrum town.
A sample budget day
- Morning: Bodrum Castle and the Museum of Underwater Archaeology (roughly €15-20 in lira).
- Lunch: pide or a lokanta plate in the back streets (about ₺400).
- Afternoon: dolmuş to Bitez (about ₺70 each way) and a swim from the free beach.
- Evening: sunset at the windmills, then a simple dinner of köfte or meze (about ₺500).
- Total: about ₺3,500 with a shared pension room
More ways to save
- Visit in late May, June or September, when rooms and boats are cheaper and the sea is already 22-25°C.
- Book pensions direct and ask for the cash price; small places sometimes give a better rate.
- Carry a water bottle and refill it; bottled water and soft drinks at beach clubs are expensive.
- Pick one paid beach-club day and spend the others on free sand.
- Share a gulet day trip instead of a private boat, which costs about €500-900 a day.
- Check the last dolmuş time (around midnight in summer) to avoid a late-night taxi.
