Tips

Common questions

What is the fastest train from Agra to Delhi?

The Gatimaan Express and the Vande Bharat Express are the quickest, at roughly 1 h 45 to 2 h from Agra Cantt. The Shatabdi Express takes about 2 h. These trains do not all use the same Delhi station — some end at Hazrat Nizamuddin, others at New Delhi — so check your ticket. Timetables change, so check the current times on IRCTC or the Indian Railways enquiry site before booking.

Can I do Delhi to Agra as a day trip?

Yes, it is one of the most common day trips in India. Take an early express train from Delhi, spend the day at the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and perhaps Mehtab Bagh, and return on an evening train. Remember the Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays. A car with driver also works, but the road takes about 4 h each way.

Is it better to take the train or a car?

The train is faster and cheaper for most travellers, as express services take about 2 h compared with 3 h 30 to 4 h by road plus Delhi traffic. A car with driver makes sense for families or groups, if you want to stop at places along the way, or if the fast trains are sold out on your date.

Do I need to book the train in advance?

Yes, for the fast express trains. Seats are reserved and the popular morning and evening departures often sell out several days ahead, especially between October and March. Book on the IRCTC website or app, which needs registration, or through a travel agent. Slower trains have more availability but take noticeably longer.
