Why visit Pompeii?
Pompeii is the Roman city buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79 and rediscovered in the 18th century, and walking its streets is the closest you can get to stepping into daily life in the Roman Empire. Paved roads still carry the ruts of cart wheels, and you can wander through the Forum, the bathhouses, bakeries with their millstones, and the amphitheatre, the oldest surviving Roman one.
The great houses are the highlight: the House of the Vettii and the Villa of the Mysteries preserve vivid wall paintings, and the House of the Faun gave us the Alexander Mosaic, now in Naples. Casts of victims, made from the hollows their bodies left in the ash, are a sobering reminder of the disaster. Allow at least half a day; the site is huge and shade is limited. Combine it with nearby Herculaneum, smaller but even better preserved, a hike up Vesuvius, and the Amalfi Coast or Sorrento, both reachable by train or bus.
