Why visit Montepulciano?

Montepulciano is a Renaissance hill town in southern Tuscany, perched on a limestone ridge between the Val d'Orcia and the Val di Chiana. It is best known for Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, one of Montepulciano's oldest prestigious red wines, and many palaces in town have historic wine cellars carved into the rock that you can visit.

The main street, the Corso, climbs steeply past churches and palazzi to Piazza Grande, the town's highest point, with the Palazzo Comunale, whose tower gives views across the Tuscan hills, and the Cathedral. Just below the town, the church of San Biagio by Antonio da Sangallo the Elder stands alone at the end of a cypress-lined avenue. Montepulciano is a great base for the Val d'Orcia: Pienza, Monticchiello, Bagno Vignoni with its thermal pool square, and Montalcino, home of Brunello, are all close. Eat pici, the thick hand-rolled pasta of the area, Chianina beef and pecorino from Pienza.
