Why visit Cefalu?

Cefalù is a seaside town on Sicily's north coast, an hour east of Palermo by train, where a medieval old town sits between a wide sandy beach and a massive rock headland called La Rocca. It combines a real beach holiday with genuine history in a way few Sicilian towns do.

The Norman cathedral, begun by King Roger II in 1131 and part of the UNESCO-listed Arab-Norman Palermo route, dominates the main square, and its apse holds a golden Byzantine mosaic of Christ Pantocrator. Wander down Corso Ruggero, visit the medieval wash-house (Lavatoio) fed by a spring, and walk the old sea walls at sunset. A steep path climbs La Rocca to the ruins of the Temple of Diana and a castle, with views over the town. Eat arancine, pasta con le sarde and fresh swordfish, and finish with cannoli. Cefalù is also a good base for the Madonie mountains and day trips to Palermo.
