Why visit Catania?

Catania is Sicily's second city, a lively, gritty place on the east coast built largely from black volcanic stone after the earthquake of 1693, under the constant gaze of Mount Etna. Its Baroque centre around Piazza del Duomo is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with the Elephant Fountain, made from lava stone, as the city's symbol.

See the Cathedral of Sant'Agata, the patron saint whose festival every February is among the largest religious events in Catania, walk Via Etnea towards the volcano, and explore the remains of the Roman theatre. The fish market, La Pescheria, just off the main square, is loud and theatrical every morning. Food is a highlight: arancini, pasta alla Norma, which was born here, horse-meat grills on Via Plebiscito, and granita with brioche for breakfast. Catania is the obvious base for Etna, whether by jeep, cable car or guided hike, and for day trips to Taormina, Syracuse and the Alcantara gorges.
