How many days in Zakynthos? 3 days: Shipwreck views, Blue Caves and turtles
By Tony Panopoulos · travel-agency planner in Greece · Updated
Zakynthos (Zante) has two very different coasts: the soft, sandy south around Laganas Bay, a National Marine Park where loggerhead turtles nest, and the wild limestone cliffs of the north-west, with the Blue Caves and Navagio, the Shipwreck beach. Three days covers both: one for the north and the caves, one for the turtle beaches and Keri, and one for the town and the quieter west. Note that landing on Navagio beach has been restricted since rockfalls in 2018, so most people now see it from boats or from the cliff-top viewpoint.
Short answer
Two days covers the Shipwreck, the Blue Caves and one turtle beach. The third day adds Zakynthos Town, the west-coast coves and a slower beach day.

The 3-day plan, day by day
Day 1: The north: Blue Caves and the Shipwreck
Morning. Drive to Agios Nikolaos in the north (about 45 minutes from town) and take a small boat to the Blue Caves at Cape Skinari (about €15-25 for 1 hour). Go early: the light inside the caves is best before noon and the sea is calmer. Some boats continue to the Shipwreck.
Afternoon. Drive to the cliff-top Navagio viewpoint near the Monastery of Agios Georgios Krimnon. The classic photo is taken from a platform about 200 metres above the rusted ship (the MV Panagiotis, wrecked in 1980). Check whether the platform is open; it has been closed at times for safety.
Evening. Watch the sunset from Kampi on the west cliffs, where tavernas sit on the edge of a 200-metre drop, then dinner in the mountain village of Exo Chora, whose old olive tree is said to be 2,000 years old.
Boats from Porto Vromi on the west coast reach Navagio's waters in about 20 minutes; they are the shortest boat trips to the Shipwreck.
Day 2: Laganas Bay and the turtles
Morning. Take a boat from Keri or Limni Keriou to Marathonisi, 'Turtle Island', in Laganas Bay, and the sea caves of Keri. Choose an operator that follows the marine park rules: boats must keep their distance from turtles and slow down in the bay.
Afternoon. Swim at Gerakas, a protected nesting beach on the Vasilikos peninsula, with sand cliffs and limited sunbeds. The beach closes at night during the nesting season, and the information centre of the marine park is at its entrance.
Evening. Drive to the Keri lighthouse for sunset over the cliffs of the south-west, then dinner in Keri village.
On turtle beaches, do not walk on the nests (marked with cages or signs), take your rubbish and do not use the beach after dark from June to October.
Day 3: Zakynthos Town and the west coast
Morning. Walk Solomos Square, named after the national poet Dionysios Solomos, who wrote the Greek national anthem and was born on the island, and the Agios Dionysios church by the port, the island's patron saint. The town was rebuilt after the 1953 earthquake.
Afternoon. Drive up Bochali hill to the Venetian castle for the view over the town and the harbour, then cross to the west coast and swim at Porto Limnionas, a narrow fjord-like cove with ladders into deep blue water.
Evening. Sunset at Porto Limnionas or Agios Leon, then dinner back in Bochali, where tavernas sometimes have kantades, Zakynthian serenades with guitars.
Laganas is the party resort of the island in summer. If you want quiet nights, stay in Vasilikos, Tsilivi or the west.
Only have 2 days?
With 2 days, do Day 1 and Day 2. You lose the town and the west-coast coves.
Got extra days?
With more time, explore the mountain villages of the interior (Kiliomenos, Volimes, known for honey and lace), or take a ferry from Agios Nikolaos to Kefalonia (about 1.5 hours, summer only).
Where to stay in Zakynthos
| Budget | Area | Why | Typical double/night |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budget | Zakynthos Town / Argassi | Cheaper, buses and the port, close to the airport. | €50-90 |
| Mid-range | Vasilikos peninsula | Quiet, near Gerakas and the best southern beaches. | €90-160 |
| Mid-range | Tsilivi | Family resort on the east coast, calm sea, many tavernas. | €80-150 |
| Comfort | West-coast and Vasilikos villas | Pool villas with sunset or sea views. | €200-450 |
Getting around
A rental car is almost essential: the north and west have few buses, and the roads are winding (about 1 hour from town to the north-west). KTEL buses connect the town with Laganas, Tsilivi and Vasilikos. The airport is 5 km from the town. Ferries arrive from Kyllini in the Peloponnese (about 1 hour), which is about 4 hours by road from Athens.
What to eat in Zakynthos
Zakynthian food is Ionian, with Venetian touches: sartsa (beef in a tomato and garlic sauce), skordostoumbi (aubergines with garlic), and ladotyri, a hard cheese kept in olive oil. The local nougat, mantolato, is sold everywhere in the town. Try the white wine Verdea, made only on Zakynthos. In the mountain villages, tavernas serve grilled meat and homemade pies for €15-20 per person; seafront tavernas in the resorts cost a little more. Fresh fish is priced by the kilo, so ask before ordering.
Best time to visit
May, June and September to early October, with highs of 25-30°C and warm sea. July and August are hot and very busy, especially in Laganas. The turtle nesting season runs from about June to August, with hatchlings in August and September. Most resorts close from November to April.

Common questions
Can I go onto Navagio beach?
Landing has been restricted since 2018 because of rockfall risk. Boats can show you the bay and the wreck from the water, and the cliff-top viewpoint, when open, gives the famous view. Check the current status locally.
Where can I see turtles?
In Laganas Bay, on responsible boat tours that keep their distance, or early in the morning from the shore in Keri and Agios Sostis. Never touch or feed them.
Which part of Zakynthos is quietest?
The Vasilikos peninsula, the west coast and the mountain villages. Laganas is the busiest party area.
Is Zakynthos good for families?
Yes: the shallow sandy beaches of Tsilivi, Kalamaki and Banana beach, and boat trips to the caves, suit children.
How do I choose a responsible boat for Laganas Bay?
Choose operators that display the National Marine Park's approval, use small glass-bottom boats, keep their distance from turtles and do not chase them. Avoid speedboats that promise close-up turtle encounters. In the protected zones, speed limits and no-anchoring rules apply.
Can I visit Zakynthos without a car?
Partly. Buses link Zakynthos Town with Laganas, Kalamaki, Tsilivi and Alykes, and boat trips include hotel transfers. To see the west coast, Keri and the mountain villages at your own pace, rent a car for at least one or two days.
