Is Zakynthos safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Zakynthos is a safe island with little crime against visitors. The realistic risks are road accidents on winding roads (especially on quads and scooters), late-night drinking in Laganas, and cliff edges and boat trips on the west coast. Most visitors have no problems.

The real risks

Quads and scooters

Many accidents involve visitors on unfamiliar roads; wear a helmet, avoid riding at night and never after drinking.

Laganas nightlife

The party strip is rowdy in July and August; watch your drink, stay with friends and use taxis.

Navagio and cliff edges

The viewpoint above Navagio has steep drops; stay behind barriers. Landing on the beach has been restricted after rockfalls, so follow current rules.

Turtle beaches

Laganas Bay is a national marine park; stick to the rules (no umbrellas in marked zones, no night access to nesting beaches).

Sun and heat

July and August reach 30–31°C; bring water and sunscreen.

Areas and times to take care

There are no areas to avoid. Laganas can be loud and drunken at night in high season. Take care on the narrow roads of the north-west and at cliff viewpoints such as Keri and Navagio.

Getting around safely

Licensed taxis are available in town and resorts; agree the fare for long trips. KTEL buses connect the town with Laganas, Tsilivi and Vasilikos. Drive carefully on winding mountain roads.

Solo and women travellers

Zakynthos is comfortable for women travelling alone. Take usual precautions in Laganas's bars and use licensed taxis late at night.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is not recommended for drinking in many areas; use bottled water. Sun is strong in summer. There is a hospital in Zakynthos Town; EU visitors should bring an EHIC or GHIC, others travel insurance.

Emergency: 112 for all emergencies; 100 for police, 166 for ambulance.
