How many days in Syros? 4 days in the Cyclades' capital and its beaches
By Tony Panopoulos · travel-agency planner in Greece · Updated
Syros is the administrative capital of the Cyclades and the one island that feels like a real town all year. Ermoupoli was Greece's main port in the 19th century, and its marble square, opera house and captains' mansions are unlike anything else in the Aegean. Above it sit two hills, one Catholic and one Orthodox. Give it four days: two for Ermoupoli and Ano Syros, and two for the beaches of the south and west coast, linked by a cheap bus.
Short answer
Two days covers Ermoupoli, Ano Syros and a sunset at Kini. Four days adds a slow beach circuit of the south, Posidonia's mansions and a boat trip to the wild north coast at Grammata.
The 4-day plan, day by day
Day 1: Ermoupoli: Miaouli Square, the Apollo Theatre and Vaporia
Morning. Start at Miaouli Square, paved in marble and dominated by the neoclassical Town Hall designed by Ernst Ziller, completed in the late 19th century. Walk 3 minutes to the Apollo Theatre, modelled on Italian opera houses and nicknamed the little La Scala (guided visits for a few euros; check times), and to the Industrial Museum of Ermoupoli if you like shipyards and old factories.
Afternoon. Walk up to Vaporia, the district of shipowners' mansions on the slope above the sea, crowned by the blue dome of Agios Nikolaos. Swim at Asteria, where concrete platforms and ladders lead straight into deep water below the mansions; it is free and about 10 minutes from the square.
Evening. Eat in the lanes around the square or on the harbour front. A taverna main costs €12-18; a souvlaki pitta about €4. Then join the evening stroll, the volta, on the waterfront.
Ermoupoli is a working town of about 11,000 people, so shops close for a long midday break and some on Sunday. Plan the museums in the morning.
Day 2: Ano Syros and the Anastasi hill
Morning. Take the town bus or a taxi (about €8) up to Ano Syros, the medieval Catholic settlement founded by the Venetians in the 13th century, then walk down. Climb its stepped lanes to the cathedral of Agios Georgios at the top for the view over Ermoupoli and the islands of Tinos and Mykonos.
Afternoon. Visit the small museum and square dedicated to Markos Vamvakaris, the father of rebetiko music, who was born in Ano Syros. Walk down by the old steps, about 30-40 minutes to Ermoupoli, and climb the other hill to the Orthodox church of Anastasi for a second view.
Evening. Have dinner in Ano Syros, where small tavernas sometimes play rebetiko in the evening; book on weekends. Expect €20-30 per person with wine. Take a taxi back down if you do not want the steps in the dark.
Buy loukoumi (Turkish delight) and halvadopita (nougat between wafers) in Ermoupoli; both are Syros specialities and sold in many traditional shops near the port.
Day 3: The south and west coast: Posidonia, Foinikas and Kini
Morning. Take the circular bus from Ermoupoli (around €2 a ride) to Posidonia, also called Dellagrazia, with grand summer villas built by the old merchant families. Swim at Agathopes, a sandy beach 10 minutes' walk away with shallow water and an islet opposite.
Afternoon. Move north along the west coast to Foinikas and its fishing harbour, then to Galissas, a sandy bay with tamarisk trees, popular with families. From Galissas, a path of about 15 minutes over the headland leads to quieter beaches.
Evening. End at Kini, a fishing village facing west, for the best sunset on the island. Fish tavernas along the beach grill the day's catch; fresh local fish costs roughly €50-80 per kilo.
Buses on the circular route run roughly every hour in summer and less often in spring and autumn. Check the KTEL Syros timetable posted at the bus station by the port.
Day 4: Boat to Grammata and the north
Morning. In summer, small boats leave from Kini for the wild northern coast, which has no road access to most beaches. The usual stop is Grammata, a cove where sailors sheltering from storms carved inscriptions into the rocks over many centuries, from ancient times to the medieval period. Trips cost about €25-45 depending on the route.
Afternoon. Many boats also stop at Lia and other small bays. Alternatively, drive north to Ano Meria, the farming district where San Michali, a hard PDO cow's-milk cheese, is made, and walk to the Early Cycladic site of Kastri, about 4,500 years old, on a hilltop near Chalandriani.
Evening. Return to Ermoupoli for a last dinner in the square, or go to Vari or Megas Gialos in the south for a quiet beach dinner.
Boats to Grammata do not sail in strong north wind. Book the evening before and check that the trip is confirmed the same morning.
Only have 2 days?
With 2 days, spend Day 1 in Ermoupoli and Ano Syros and Day 2 on the beach circuit ending at Kini for sunset. You lose the boat trip to Grammata and the north.
Got extra days?
Syros is a hub: fast ferries take you to Tinos in about 30-40 minutes and Mykonos in about 1 hour, so a 5th day can be a day trip to Tinos and its villages of Pyrgos and Volax. Check current timetables. In summer (usually July), the island's Festival Aegean brings opera to the Apollo Theatre.
Where to stay in Syros
| Budget | Area | Why | Typical double/night |
|---|---|---|---|

Getting around
Ferries from Piraeus take roughly 2-2.5 hours on fast boats and 3.5-4 hours on conventional ones, and there are boats from Rafina too; Syros also links with Tinos, Mykonos, Paros and Naxos. Check current timetables. A small airport has short flights from Athens (about 35 minutes). Ermoupoli is walkable, with steep steps to Ano Syros. The KTEL bus runs a circular route through the southern beach villages for about €2; taxis wait at the port.
What to eat in Syros
Syros has two famous sweets: loukoumi, made on the island since the 19th century, and halvadopita, honey nougat between thin wafers. Try the local cheese San Michali, a hard, salty PDO cheese, and the louza, a cured pork fillet with spices made in the villages. Fish tavernas at Kini and Foinikas serve fresh catch and kakavia fish soup. In Ermoupoli, the restaurants around the market on Chiou Street and Miaouli Square serve good meze; a full meal with house wine is about €20-30. Ouzeri (meze bars) open late into the night all year.
Best time to visit
May to October, with June and September the best months: 24-28°C, warm sea and fewer visitors. Unlike most of the Cyclades, Syros stays open all year, because it is a working town with a university and the regional administration, so winter weekends (around 12-15°C) are quiet but not closed. The north wind can be strong in July and August.
What a day costs
| Budget | Mid-range | Comfort | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bed (per person, sharing a double) | €35 | €70 | €150 |
| Food & drink | €25 | €40 | €75 |
| Sights & tickets | €5 | €20 | €45 |
| Local transport | €5 | €12 | €35 |

Common questions
Is Syros good for beaches?
Yes, though it is better known for its town. The south and west coasts have sandy, sheltered beaches such as Galissas, Agathopes, Vari, Megas Gialos and Kini, all reached by the circular bus. The wild north coast, including Grammata and Lia, is best reached by boat. In Ermoupoli itself, people swim from the rocks at Asteria.
Can I visit Syros from Mykonos as a day trip?
Yes. Fast ferries take about 1 hour, and in summer there are usually morning and evening boats that allow a full day in Ermoupoli and Ano Syros. Check current timetables before you plan, because routes and times change each season, and remember that fast ferries are more sensitive to strong wind.
Is Ano Syros worth the climb?
Yes. The medieval Catholic town has some of the oldest continuous street patterns in the Cyclades, a cathedral with wide views and the Markos Vamvakaris square. To avoid the climb, take a bus or taxi to the top and walk down about 30-40 minutes on steps to Ermoupoli, ideally in the late afternoon.
Is Syros open in winter?
Mostly. Ermoupoli is a year-round town with shops, restaurants and the Apollo Theatre's winter programme, and ferries continue to run. Beach hotels and tavernas in Kini, Galissas and Posidonia usually close from November to April, and boat trips stop, but the town is calm and pleasant for walking.
