Is Syros expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Syros is one of the better-value islands in the Cyclades and noticeably cheaper than nearby Mykonos, because it is a working town with year-round residents. A budget day is about €70 per person, mid-range about €142 and comfort about €305; rooms in restored mansions, fish dinners and ferries are where the money goes.

Where the money goes
Rooms are the main cost, especially in restored neoclassical mansions and in July and August. Fish dinners at Kini and Foinikas and the summer boat trip to Grammata come next. Ferries add up if you are island-hopping, though Syros is a hub with frequent connections. Everyday costs are reasonable: the circular bus is about €2, swimming at Asteria is free and the Apollo Theatre visit costs a few euros. Greece also adds a per-room, per-night climate resilience fee, higher from April to October.
When it is cheaper
May, June, September and October are cheaper than July and August; Ermoupoli stays open all year, so winter rooms in town are inexpensive, while beach hotels usually close from November to April.
How to spend less
- Stay in Ermoupoli and use the circular bus to the beaches.
- Swim from the free platforms at Asteria below Vaporia.
- Take the bus or a taxi up to Ano Syros and walk down instead of paying for two taxi rides.
- Eat meze at the ouzeri around the market on Chiou Street rather than on the harbour front.
- Buy loukoumi and halvadopita in traditional shops in town as cheaper souvenirs than in tourist shops.
- Use Syros as a base for day trips to Tinos by ferry rather than moving hotels.
