Is Syros safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Syros is very safe, with low crime and a calm, lived-in town. The realistic risks are the steep steps of Ano Syros, scooter accidents, the meltemi wind in July and August and deep-water swimming from the rocks at Asteria.
The real risks
Steep steps
The lanes and steps between Ermoupoli and Ano Syros are steep and can be slippery; wear good shoes and take a taxi down at night.
Scooters
Roads are narrow and winding outside town; wear a helmet and ride carefully.
Meltemi wind
Strong north wind in July and August cancels boats to Grammata and can make west-coast beaches rough.
Deep-water swimming
At Asteria the water is deep straight from the platforms; swim only in calm sea.
Petty theft
Rare; take normal care at the port and on beaches.
Areas and times to take care
There are no areas to avoid. Ermoupoli's square and waterfront are busy and friendly in the evening all year.
Getting around safely
The KTEL circular bus is safe and cheap; taxis wait at the port. Fast ferries are more affected by strong wind than conventional ones.
Solo and women travellers
Syros is very comfortable for women travelling alone, with a real town atmosphere, students and families in the evenings. Usual precautions apply at night.
Health, water and heat
Many visitors drink bottled water; ask your host about the local supply. Sun protection is essential in summer. Ermoupoli has a general hospital.
