How many days in the Peloponnese? 6 days by car, from the Corinth Canal to Mani
By Tony Panopoulos · travel-agency planner in Greece · Updated
The Peloponnese is the half of Greece most visitors only cross on the way to Olympia. Give it six days and a car. Every famous name of Greek history is here within a few hours' drive: Corinth, Mycenae, Epidaurus, Sparta, the Byzantine city of Mystras and the rock of Monemvasia. Base yourself two nights in Nafplio, then work south through Laconia to the stone towers of Mani. Distances are short; the roads off the motorway are slow, so plan on 50-60 km an hour.
Short answer
Four days covers Corinth, Nafplio, Mycenae and Epidaurus with one night in Monemvasia. Six adds Mystras and the Mani peninsula, which is the part of the trip most people remember.

The 6-day plan, day by day
Day 1: Corinth Canal, Ancient Corinth and Acrocorinth
Morning. Leave Athens early on the Olympia Odos motorway; the Corinth Canal is about 80 km and an hour away. Stop at the old road bridge above the cut: 6.4 km long, opened in 1893, with rock walls up to about 80 metres high. At the Isthmia end, the submersible bridge sinks under the water to let boats pass.
Afternoon. Drive 15 minutes to Ancient Corinth for the Temple of Apollo, the Roman forum, the Bema where the Apostle Paul is said to have spoken, and a good small museum (ticket roughly €15-20 after the 2025 price changes; check hhticket.gr). Then drive up to Acrocorinth, the fortress on the 575-metre rock above the site, for the view over both gulfs.
Evening. Continue about 50 minutes to Nafplio for two nights, and walk the harbour front past the Bourtzi castle in the bay as the lights come on.
Nemea is on the way: wineries such as those around Ancient Nemea open for tastings of Agiorgitiko, the local red, usually for €10-20.
Day 2: Nafplio: Palamidi, the old town and Arvanitia
Morning. Climb to Palamidi, the Venetian fortress finished in 1714, before the heat: about 900 steps from Arvanitia Street (locals will tell you 999), or drive up to the gate. Ticket roughly €10. Theodoros Kolokotronis, the hero of the 1821 War of Independence, was held prisoner in one of its bastions.
Afternoon. Walk the old town: Syntagma Square, with the Vouleftiko just behind it, the former mosque that housed the first Greek parliament; the church of Agios Spyridon, where Ioannis Kapodistrias, the first governor of Greece, was assassinated in 1831 (the bullet mark is still in the wall). Nafplio was the first capital of modern Greece until 1834.
Evening. Walk the Arvanitia promenade around the Akronafplia headland at sunset, about 30 minutes, or continue on the path to Karathona beach, roughly 3 km. Dinner in the lanes of Staikopoulou Street.
Small boats leave the harbour for the Bourtzi for about €5-6 return. The castle itself is often closed for restoration, so ask whether you can land or only sail around it.
Day 3: Mycenae and the theatre of Epidaurus
Morning. Drive 30 minutes north to Mycenae for the 8:00 opening. Walk through the Lion Gate, up to the palace of Agamemnon. Do not miss the Treasury of Atreus, the beehive tomb 500 metres down the road, which is on the same ticket (roughly €20 in high season).
Afternoon. Drive about 1 hour east to Epidaurus. The theatre from the 4th century BC seats around 13,000-14,000 people, and a coin dropped on the stage is heard from the top row. Ticket roughly €20; allow 2 hours.
Evening. Swim at Palaia Epidavros (Archaia Epidavros) on the Saronic coast, 20 minutes away, where a small ancient theatre sits by the sea and fish tavernas line the harbour. Return to Nafplio, about 40 minutes.
In July and August the Athens & Epidaurus Festival stages ancient drama in the theatre on Friday and Saturday nights.
Day 4: Sparta and Byzantine Mystras
Morning. Drive south on the Moreas motorway via Tripoli to Sparta, about 1h45 from Nafplio. Little remains of the ancient city, but the Museum of the Olive and Greek Olive Oil is a good 1-hour stop.
Afternoon. Continue 10 minutes to Mystras, the UNESCO-listed Byzantine city on the slope of Taygetos, and the last capital of the Despotate of the Morea. Start at the upper gate near the castle and walk downhill past the Palace of the Despots, the frescoed Pantanassa monastery, where nuns still live, and the Peribleptos church. Allow 3 hours and good shoes; ticket roughly €20.
Evening. Drive about 1h20 to Monemvasia. Sleep inside the walled lower town on the rock if you can; the cars stay outside the gate, and at night the lanes are lit only by lamps.
Mystras has two entrances. If you are driving alone, park at the lower gate, take a taxi up from Mystras village (a few euros), and walk down.
Day 5: Monemvasia and the road to Mani
Morning. Walk Monemvasia's lower town early, along the main lane past the church of Christos Elkomenos, the house where the poet Yannis Ritsos was born, and out to the lighthouse by the sea wall. Then climb the zigzag path, about 20 minutes, to the upper town and the 12th-century church of Agia Sofia on the cliff edge. Entry to the rock is free.
Afternoon. Either take the 10-minute ferry from Pounta to Elafonisos for the white sand of Simos beach, or drive about 1h45 west to Gytheio, the harbour town of Mani. Walk the causeway to the islet of Marathonisi, then stop at Valtaki beach, where the rusted wreck of the ship Dimitrios has lain on the sand since 1981.
Evening. Drive 30 minutes into Mani to Areopoli, the stone town where the Maniots raised the flag of revolution on 17 March 1821. Stay in a restored tower house and eat in the square around the church of the Taxiarches.
Try the local Malvasia sweet wine in Monemvasia, the name the Venetians took from the town itself. Fill up with fuel before Mani; stations are few south of Areopoli.
Day 6: Deep Mani: Diros caves, Vathia and Cape Tenaro
Morning. Be at the Diros caves (Vlychada) for the 8:30-9:00 opening, 10 minutes south of Areopoli. A boatman punts you through more than a kilometre of flooded passages full of stalactites, then you walk out; about 40 minutes, roughly €15-20. Queues grow after 10:00 in August.
Afternoon. Drive south through the tower villages to Vathia, a cluster of stone towers on a ridge, and on to the end of the road at Kokkinogia. A path of about 2 km, 30-40 minutes each way, leads to the lighthouse at Cape Tenaro, the southernmost point of mainland Greece.
Evening. Return north for sunset over Limeni bay, 5 minutes below Areopoli, where fish tavernas sit on the water.
There is little shade at Cape Tenaro. In summer walk it before 11:00 or after 17:00, carry water, and wear real shoes; the path is rocky.
Only have 4 days?
With 4 days, do Days 1 to 3, then drive to Monemvasia on Day 4 and back to Athens (about 4 hours). You lose Mystras and Mani.
Got extra days?
With extra days, continue from Mani up the coast to Kardamyli and Stoupa, then to Kalamata, Pylos with the bay of Voidokilia, and the Venetian castle of Methoni. Ancient Olympia is about 2 hours north of Kalamata and fits on the way back to Athens via Patras.
Where to stay in Peloponnese
| Budget | Area | Why | Typical double/night |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budget | Nafplio new town / Gytheio | Rooms 10 minutes' walk from the old town, and cheaper harbour rooms in Gytheio for Mani. | €50-80 |
| Mid-range | Nafplio old town | Walk everywhere, two nights for Mycenae and Epidaurus. | €80-150 |
| Mid-range | Areopoli tower houses | Restored stone towers, central for the caves, Limeni and Cape Tenaro. | €80-140 |
| Comfort | Monemvasia castle town | Stone guesthouses inside the walls, quiet after the day visitors leave. | €140-280 |
Getting around
Rent a car; public transport between the sites is thin. KTEL buses do run from Athens' Kifissos terminal to Nafplio (about 2 hours, roughly €15) and from Nafplio to Mycenae and Epidaurus, but only a few times a day. Driving times: Athens to Nafplio about 1h45 (around 140 km), Nafplio to Sparta 1h45, Sparta to Monemvasia 1h20, Monemvasia to Areopoli about 2h. Motorway tolls from Athens to Nafplio add up to roughly €10-12.
What to eat in Peloponnese
Peloponnese food is olive oil, pork and wine. In Mani, order siglino (pork smoked with sage and cured in oil), lalagia (fried dough strips) and kagianas (eggs scrambled with tomato, often with siglino). Across the region, diples are thin fried pastries with honey and walnuts. Kalamata olives come from Messinia, and Argolida grows most of Greece's oranges. Drink Agiorgitiko from Nemea and the white Moschofilero of Mantinia. A taverna meal with wine costs €15-25 per person, a souvlaki or gyros €3.50-4.50.
Best time to visit
May, June and September to mid-October, with highs of 24-30°C and warm sea from June. July and August reach 35°C and above inland at Mycenae and Mystras, so start at opening time. In winter many guesthouses in Mani and Monemvasia close, and the ancient sites close earlier, often around 15:30-17:00.

Common questions
Can I do the Peloponnese without a car?
Partly. Nafplio works by KTEL bus, with connections to Mycenae and Epidaurus a few times a day, and day tours run from Nafplio and Athens. Mystras, Monemvasia and especially Mani are hard without a car: buses are infrequent and do not reach Vathia or Cape Tenaro.
Is there one ticket for Mycenae, Epidaurus and Mystras?
No. Each site is sold separately on the official Hellenic Heritage site (hhticket.gr) or at the gate, with a higher rate from April to October since 2025. The Treasury of Atreus is included in the Mycenae ticket, and EU citizens under 25 enter free with ID.
Where should I sleep in the Peloponnese?
Two nights in Nafplio for Corinth, Mycenae and Epidaurus, one in Monemvasia after Mystras, and one or two in Areopoli or Limeni for Mani. That keeps every driving day under about two and a half hours. In August, book Monemvasia's castle guesthouses early; they have few rooms.
Can I add Olympia to this trip?
Yes, as the last stop. From Mani drive to Kalamata and Pylos, then about 2 hours north to Olympia, then roughly 3h30-4 hours back to Athens via Patras on the Olympia Odos. Give it at least two extra days rather than squeezing it in.
