Is Peloponnese expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
The Peloponnese is one of the best-value regions of Greece: cheaper than the islands and Athens for rooms and food, and far cheaper than Western Europe. Plan on about €87 a day per person on a budget, €145 mid-range and €250 for comfort. A rental car and archaeological tickets are the main costs; tavernas and guesthouses are good value.

Where the money goes
Transport is the biggest single cost for most visitors: public transport between the ancient sites is thin, so you rent a car and pay for fuel and motorway tolls. Accommodation is next, highest in Nafplio's old town and Monemvasia's castle town in summer; Greece also adds a per-room climate resilience fee every night. Archaeological tickets rose in 2025, so a day with Mycenae and Epidaurus costs around €40 per person. Food is good value, with taverna meals much cheaper than in Athens or the islands.
When it is cheaper
April, May, October and early November are cheaper than July and August, with lower room prices and reduced ticket prices at many sites outside high season. In winter some guesthouses in the Mani and Monemvasia close.
How to spend less
- Visit archaeological sites on their free-entry days, such as the first Sunday of the month from November to March (check the official list).
- Stay in Nafplio's new town or Gytheio for cheaper rooms than the old town or Monemvasia.
- Use the old national roads instead of motorways for short hops to save on tolls.
- Plan Mycenae and Epidaurus on the same day from Nafplio to save driving.
- Eat in family tavernas away from the harbour fronts, and order house wine.
- Check student and EU youth discounts — under-25s from the EU often get free entry to state sites.
