How many days in Okinawa? 5 days on the main island, from Naha to the Yanbaru forest
By Tony Panopoulos · travel-agency planner in Greece · Updated
Okinawa is Japan with a different history, a different cuisine and a subtropical sea. The main island is about 100 km long, and the sights are spread from Naha in the south to the forests of Yanbaru in the north, so give it five days and rent a car. Base yourself in Naha for the first three nights (the city, the south and a ferry to the Kerama Islands), then move north to the Motobu Peninsula for the aquarium, the castle ruins and the beaches.
Short answer
Four days covers Naha, the south, Churaumi Aquarium and Kouri Island. Five lets you add a day on the Kerama Islands, the clearest water within reach of Naha.
The 5-day plan, day by day
Day 1: Naha: Shuri, Tsuboya and Kokusai-dori
Morning. Take the Yui Rail monorail (about 30 minutes from the airport, a few hundred yen) to Shuri Castle, the seat of the Ryukyu kings, on a hill above Naha. The main hall burned in 2019 and is being rebuilt, with completion planned for around 2026; meanwhile you can walk the stone gates and walls and see the reconstruction work from viewing decks (around ¥400). Walk down the old stone-paved Kinjocho lane through the trees.
Afternoon. Visit Tsuboya Yachimun Street, the pottery quarter, with workshops and a small pottery museum. Then walk to Kokusai-dori, Naha's main shopping street, about 1.6 km long, and the covered arcades beside it.
Evening. Eat at the Makishi Public Market, where you choose fish and seafood on the ground floor and have it cooked upstairs for a small fee. Try umibudo (sea grapes), a local seaweed, with an Orion beer. A meal costs ¥2,500-4,500 per person.
Okinawa's rainy season runs from about mid-May to late June, earlier than in mainland Japan. Typhoons are possible from July to October; keep a flexible day in your plan.
Day 2: The south: Sefa-utaki and the Peace Memorial Park
Morning. Pick up a rental car and drive about 45 minutes to Sefa-utaki in Nanjo, the most sacred site of the Ryukyu kingdom, where forest paths lead to a triangular gap between huge rocks, with a view out to Kudaka Island. Entry is a few hundred yen, and the site closes on some days each year for rituals.
Afternoon. Drive about 30 minutes to the Okinawa Prefectural Peace Memorial Park in Itoman, on the cliffs where the Battle of Okinawa ended in 1945. The Cornerstone of Peace lists the names of more than 240,000 people who died, from all sides. The museum is sobering and well documented (a few hundred yen). Nearby, the Himeyuri Peace Museum tells the story of the students mobilised as nurses.
Evening. Return to Naha and try Okinawa soba, thick wheat noodles in broth with braised pork, for about ¥800-1,200, and a glass of awamori, the local distilled spirit, in a small bar off Kokusai-dori.
On the way, stop at Okinawa World, a theme park built around the Gyokusendo cave, a long limestone cave with a walkway, if you have children with you (around ¥2,000).
Day 3: A ferry to the Kerama Islands
Morning. Take the high-speed ferry from Tomari Port in Naha to Zamami or Tokashiki, about 35-50 minutes (roughly ¥3,000-3,500 each way; book ahead in summer). The Kerama Islands are a national park with some of the clearest water in Japan, and sea turtles are often seen near the shore.
Afternoon. On Zamami, walk or take the small island bus to Furuzamami Beach for snorkelling, or rent a kayak. On Tokashiki, go to Aharen Beach. Snorkel gear can be rented on the islands for about ¥1,000-2,000.
Evening. Take the last ferry back to Naha, usually in the late afternoon, and have dinner in the Sakaemachi market area near Asato station, a cluster of small izakaya and bars.
From about January to March, humpback whales visit the waters around the Kerama Islands, and whale-watching tours run from Zamami and from Naha.
Day 4: Cape Manzamo and the Churaumi Aquarium
Morning. Check out of Naha and drive north on the expressway. Stop at Cape Manzamo in Onna, a grassy clifftop above the sea, with a rock formation often compared to an elephant's trunk (about ¥100). Then continue to the Motobu Peninsula, about 2 hours from Naha in total.
Afternoon. Spend 2-3 hours at the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, whose main tank, the Kuroshio Sea, holds whale sharks and manta rays (around ¥2,200 for adults; cheaper after 16:00). The aquarium stands in Ocean Expo Park, which also has free dolphin shows and a beach.
Evening. Walk the Bise Fukugi tree road, a village of old houses surrounded by tall fukugi trees planted as windbreaks, a few minutes from the aquarium. Watch the sunset over the East China Sea from Emerald Beach.
Expressway buses from Naha to the aquarium take about 2-2.5 hours. If you do not drive, consider a day tour from Naha that combines the aquarium, Manzamo and Kouri Island.
Day 5: Kouri Island, Nakijin Castle and Yanbaru
Morning. Drive across the Kouri Bridge, about 2 km long, over turquoise shallows to Kouri Island, and swim at the beach beside the bridge. Then visit Nakijin Castle ruins, a UNESCO-listed hilltop castle with long, curving stone walls; in late January and February, cherry blossoms bloom here (around ¥600).
Afternoon. Head north into Yanbaru, the subtropical forest that covers the northern part of the island and is on the UNESCO natural heritage list. Drive to Cape Hedo, the northern tip, about 1.5 hours from Nakijin, and walk the short trails at Daisekirinzan among karst rocks (around ¥1,200).
Evening. Drive back south or stay in Motobu or Nago. For dinner, order goya champuru, a stir-fry of bitter melon, tofu, egg and pork, and rafute, pork belly slow-cooked in soy and awamori.
Drive slowly in Yanbaru: the Okinawa rail, a flightless bird found only here, crosses the roads, and signs warn drivers. Fuel stations are few in the far north.
Only have 4 days?
With 4 days, drop the Kerama Islands, or replace them with a beach afternoon near Naha. With 3 days, do Naha, a day for the south, and one long day north to the aquarium and Kouri Island.
Got extra days?
With a 6th or 7th day, fly to Ishigaki or Miyako, about 1 hour from Naha, for the reefs and beaches of the outer islands, or spend a second day in the Keramas. On the main island, the American Village in Chatan is a lively evening spot, and the forest trails of Yanbaru deserve a full day.
Where to stay in Okinawa
| Budget | Area | Why | Typical double/night |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budget | Naha, around Kokusai-dori and Asahibashi | Hostels and business hotels on the monorail line, close to the restaurants. | ¥6,000-12,000 |
| Mid-range | Naha centre | Business and city hotels on the Yui Rail line, ideal for the first nights and Tomari port. | ¥12,000-25,000 |
| Mid-range | Motobu and Nago | Hotels and guesthouses near the aquarium, Kouri Island and Nakijin. | ¥12,000-25,000 |
| Comfort | Onna coast resorts | Beach resorts with pools on the west coast, halfway between Naha and the aquarium. | ¥35,000-80,000 |
Getting around
Naha Airport has flights from Tokyo (about 2.5-3 hours), Osaka and other Asian cities. The Yui Rail monorail links the airport, central Naha and Shuri (single fares about ¥270-370; one- and two-day passes available). Outside Naha there is no train, so a rental car is the easiest way to explore (roughly ¥5,000-10,000 a day, plus expressway tolls of about ¥1,000 to the north); you need an International Driving Permit, and traffic in Naha is slow at rush hour. Expressway buses run to the Churaumi Aquarium and Nago. Ferries to the Kerama Islands leave from Tomari Port.
What to eat in Okinawa
Okinawan food reflects centuries of trade with China and South-East Asia, and the long American presence. Try Okinawa soba, goya champuru, rafute and jimami tofu (peanut tofu). Taco rice, taco filling on rice, was invented near the US bases and is now a local staple, about ¥600-1,000. Umibudo (sea grapes) pop in the mouth with a salty taste. Drink Orion beer or awamori, the Okinawan spirit distilled from rice, best in a bar with live sanshin music. For dessert, Blue Seal ice cream in flavours like beni-imo (purple sweet potato) and salted chinsuko. A meal costs ¥1,000-2,000 for lunch and ¥3,000-6,000 for dinner.
Best time to visit
April to early May and October to November are the most comfortable, with highs of 24-28°C, swimmable water and fewer storms. The rainy season is from about mid-May to late June. July to September is hot (31-33°C) and humid, with the best sea for snorkelling but the highest typhoon risk. Winter is mild (around 17-20°C), too cool for most people to swim, but good for whale-watching and the early cherry blossoms in late January and February. Golden Week (late April to early May) is very busy with Japanese visitors.

Common questions
Do I need a car in Okinawa?
For the main island, almost certainly. The monorail only covers Naha, and buses outside the city are slow and infrequent. A rental car makes the south, the Motobu Peninsula and Yanbaru easy. Bring an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention, remember that Japan drives on the left, and allow extra time in Naha traffic.
Is Shuri Castle open after the 2019 fire?
Yes, the castle grounds are open and you can see the gates, walls and the rebuilding of the main hall, which is planned to be completed around 2026, with a viewing route around the work. Ticket prices and the visitor route change as the work progresses, so check the official Shuri Castle Park website for the latest situation.
When is the best time to snorkel in Okinawa?
The sea is warmest from June to October, at around 27-29°C, with the clearest water in the Kerama Islands. That season also brings typhoons, which can cancel ferries for a few days. April, May and November are good compromises: the water is cooler but still pleasant for most swimmers, and the islands are quieter.
How long does it take to drive from Naha to the Churaumi Aquarium?
About 1.5-2 hours, using the Okinawa Expressway as far as Kyoda and then the coastal road through Nago to Motobu. Traffic leaving Naha in the morning can add time. Many visitors combine the aquarium with Cape Manzamo on the way and stay a night on the Motobu Peninsula rather than driving back the same day.
