Okinawa on a budget: how to do it well
Short answer
Yes, with some planning: hostels, local food and cheap sights help, though a car is hard to avoid outside Naha. A realistic minimum is about ¥11,000 a day per person sharing a room — around ¥4,000 for a bed, ¥3,500 for food, ¥1,500 for sights and ¥2,000 for transport.

Where to sleep for less
Budget travellers stay in hostels and business hotels in Naha around Kokusai-dori and Asahibashi, on the monorail line, at about ¥6,000–12,000 a room. On the Motobu Peninsula, guesthouses are a cheaper alternative to resorts.
Getting around cheaply
Use the Yui Rail monorail (about ¥270–370 a ride, with one- and two-day passes) for the airport, central Naha and Shuri. Share a rental car with others for the south and the north, or use expressway buses to the aquarium and Nago. Ferries to the Kerama Islands leave from Tomari Port.
A sample budget day
- Morning: the monorail to Shuri (about ¥370) and the castle grounds (around ¥400)
- Lunch: Okinawa soba (about ¥900)
- Afternoon: Tsuboya pottery street and Kokusai-dori on foot (free)
- Evening: dinner at a shokudo (about ¥1,500) and the monorail back
- Total: about ¥11,000 including a shared room (about ¥4,000 per person)
More ways to save
- Buy a monorail day pass if you will ride more than three times in Naha.
- Use convenience stores for breakfast and drinks.
- Share a rental car and split fuel and tolls.
- Do the Kerama Islands as one long day rather than staying overnight in peak season.
- Travel in November or March, when the weather is still pleasant and prices are lower.
- Check for cover charges (otoshi or table charge) before sitting down in izakaya.
