Is Okinawa expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Okinawa is moderately priced by Japanese standards: local food and many sights are good value, but you will almost certainly need a rental car, and beach resorts are expensive. Expect about ¥11,000 a day per person on a tight budget, about ¥22,000 mid-range and ¥50,000 or more for comfort. Rooms, the car and ferries to the islands take most of the money.

Where the money goes
Accommodation is the largest cost: hostels and business hotels in Naha cost about ¥6,000–12,000, city hotels ¥12,000–25,000 and beach resorts on the Onna coast ¥35,000–80,000. Transport is the second, because outside Naha there is no train: a rental car is roughly ¥5,000–10,000 a day, plus fuel and expressway tolls of about ¥1,000 to the north. A return ferry to the Kerama Islands adds about ¥6,000–7,000. Food is good value, with lunch for ¥1,000–2,000 and dinner for ¥3,000–6,000, and most sights charge only a few hundred yen.
When it is cheaper
Winter, from about December to February (outside New Year), is the low season for beach hotels, and rates are often noticeably lower. Golden Week (late April to early May) and the summer school holidays in late July and August are the most expensive periods; check rates for your dates.
How to spend less
- Stay in Naha on the Yui Rail line for the first nights and pick up a rental car only for the days you leave the city.
- Visit the Churaumi Aquarium after 16:00, when tickets are cheaper.
- Eat at shokudo (local canteens) and soba shops rather than resort restaurants.
- Ask the total price (fish plus cooking fee per person) at the Makishi Public Market before you buy.
- Buy snacks and souvenirs in supermarkets rather than on Kokusai-dori.
- Avoid Golden Week and the August holidays if you want lower prices.
