How many days in Ninh Binh? 4 days of rowing boats, karst peaks and pagodas

By Tony Panopoulos · travel-agency planner in Greece · Updated

Ninh Binh, about 90-100 km south of Hanoi, is a landscape of sharp limestone peaks rising from rice fields and slow rivers, often called the 'Ha Long Bay on land'. The Trang An Landscape Complex was listed by UNESCO in 2014, and this is also where Hoa Lu, Vietnam's capital in the 10th century, stood. Most visitors come on a day tour from Hanoi; stay four days instead and you can be on the water before the tour buses arrive, cycle between villages in the late afternoon and add the forests of Cuc Phuong. Base yourself in Tam Coc, a village among the peaks.

Short answer

4 days is the sweet spot2 days is the minimum worth it

Two days covers the Tam Coc and Trang An boat trips, Hang Mua and Hoa Lu. Four days adds Bai Dinh, the Van Long wetland, Cuc Phuong National Park and unhurried cycling.

The 4-day plan, day by day

Day 1: Tam Coc, Bich Dong and Hang Mua

Morning. Be at the Tam Coc boat pier by 7:00 for the river trip through three low caves and rice fields between the peaks, about 1.5-2 hours. Expect an entry of about ₫120,000 per person plus about ₫150,000-200,000 per boat; rowers, often local women, sometimes row with their feet. Bring small notes for a tip of ₫50,000-100,000.

Afternoon. Rent a bicycle (about ₫50,000-100,000 a day) and ride 2-3 km to Bich Dong, a pagoda built in three levels into a limestone cliff, with steps and caves between them (free). Ride back through the paddies in the shade of the peaks, or rest in your homestay during the midday heat.

Evening. Cycle to Hang Mua (Mua Cave) about 1.5 hours before sunset, pay about ₫100,000, and climb the roughly 500 stone steps to a dragon statue on the summit for the view over the Tam Coc river. Dinner in Tam Coc village: a plate of com chay (crispy rice) and goat dishes cost about ₫80,000-200,000.

The steps at Hang Mua are steep, uneven and slippery after rain; climb with water and proper shoes, and come down before it gets dark.

Day 2: Trang An and the ancient capital of Hoa Lu

Morning. Go to the Trang An boat station early, about 15 minutes from Tam Coc. Boats seat four or five, take about 2.5-3 hours and cost about ₫250,000 per person; choose one of the numbered routes, which pass through several caves and stop at temples. One of the routes passes the reconstructed village set from the film Kong: Skull Island; ask at the ticket desk which.

Afternoon. Ride or drive 10 minutes to Hoa Lu, the capital under the Dinh and early Le dynasties in the late 10th century. Visit the temples of King Dinh Tien Hoang and King Le Dai Hanh (about ₫20,000-30,000), set in a valley between limestone hills, and climb the hill behind them for the view.

Evening. Back in Tam Coc, eat at a family restaurant. Try de nui (mountain goat), served grilled, steamed or as a salad with herbs, wrapped in rice paper; a shared meal costs about ₫200,000-350,000 per person with beer.

Go to Trang An at 7:00-8:00 or after 15:00; between 10:00 and 14:00, tour groups from Hanoi fill the piers, and the boats queue at the caves.

Day 3: Bai Dinh pagoda and the Van Long wetland

Morning. Drive about 30 minutes to Bai Dinh, one of the largest Buddhist complexes in Vietnam, built from the early 2000s next to a much older cave pagoda. Entry is free; an electric cart from the gate costs about ₫30,000 each way. Walk the long corridors of arhat statues to the main halls and the tall bell tower. Allow 2-3 hours.

Afternoon. Continue about 30-40 minutes to the Van Long Nature Reserve, one of the largest wetland reserves in northern Vietnam. Bamboo boats (about ₫60,000-100,000 per person including entry) glide across the calm water, where you may see Delacour's langur, a rare primate, on the cliffs with luck and binoculars.

Evening. Return to Tam Coc and cycle the quiet lanes at dusk, past ducks and water buffalo returning from the fields. Have dinner and a drink at one of the cafés overlooking the river.

Bai Dinh asks for modest dress: cover shoulders and knees, and take off shoes in some shrines.

Day 4: Cuc Phuong National Park

Morning. Drive about 1-1.5 hours west to Cuc Phuong, which became Vietnam's first national park in 1962 (entry roughly ₫60,000). Start at the Endangered Primate Rescue Center, which cares for langurs and gibbons rescued from trafficking (guided visits at set times, extra fee).

Afternoon. Walk in the forest to the Thousand-Year-Old Tree, a giant on a marked trail of about 1-2 hours, and to the Cave of Prehistoric Man, where traces of early inhabitants were found. Cycle part of the park road if you rent a bicycle at the headquarters.

Evening. Return to Tam Coc for a last dinner, or stay overnight in the park's simple guesthouses to hear the forest at night and walk again at dawn.

For a cultural day instead, go to Phat Diem Cathedral at Kim Son, about 45 minutes south-east: a late-19th-century stone and wooden church built in the style of a Vietnamese pagoda (free).

Only have 2 days?

With 2 days, do Tam Coc and Hang Mua on Day 1, and Trang An with Hoa Lu on Day 2. As a day trip from Hanoi, choose Trang An and Hang Mua only.

Got extra days?

A 5th day can go to the Thung Nham bird park and caves, or continue to Ha Long Bay or Lan Ha Bay (about 3 hours by road) for a night on a boat. Ninh Binh also works as a stop on the train south towards Hue.

What to eat in Ninh Binh

Ninh Binh is known for two dishes: de nui (mountain goat), grilled, steamed with lemongrass or as a rare salad, and com chay, crispy rice cakes topped with a meat or seafood sauce. You will also find pho, bun cha and fresh spring rolls, and snails and freshwater fish by the rivers. Tam Coc has many travellers' cafés serving Western food and smoothies. A street meal costs ₫40,000-80,000; a full family-restaurant dinner ₫150,000-350,000.

Best time to visit

March to May and September to November, with highs of 22-30°C. The rice in Tam Coc is green in spring and golden in late May to early June, the most photographed moment of the year. June to August is hot and humid (32-35°C) with heavy rain. Winter, December to February, is cool and often grey (14-20°C). Avoid Tet (Lunar New Year) and the weeks after it, when pilgrims crowd Bai Dinh.

Common questions

Tam Coc or Trang An: which boat trip is better?

If you have time, do both: they feel different. Tam Coc is shorter, about 1.5-2 hours, along one river through rice fields and three caves. Trang An is longer, about 2.5-3 hours, through more caves and wider waters with temple stops, and is better organised with fixed prices. With only one choice, most travellers pick Trang An.

Is Ninh Binh worth staying overnight?

Yes. Day tours from Hanoi spend about 4-5 hours on the road and arrive at the busiest times. Staying overnight in Tam Coc lets you take the boats at 7:00, climb Hang Mua at sunset when the light is soft, and cycle the lanes when it is cooler. Homestays are cheap and friendly, so one or two nights cost little.

When is the rice golden in Tam Coc?

Usually in late May and early June, just before the harvest, when the fields along the river turn yellow. This short window, often only one to two weeks, is the one most photographers come for, and the fields are cut soon after. Timing changes slightly each year with the weather, so ask your homestay in mid-May.

How do I get from Ninh Binh to Ha Long Bay?

There is no train, but shuttle buses and limousine vans run directly from Tam Coc and Ninh Binh to Ha Long and Lan Ha Bay in about 3-4 hours, and many cruise companies offer transfers. Book through your homestay or the cruise operator, and check whether the price includes the pick-up in Tam Coc.
