Where the money goes
Entry tickets and boat trips take a big share of a short trip: Trang An at about ₫250,000, Tam Coc at about ₫120,000 plus the boat, Hang Mua at about ₫100,000 and tips for rowers. Rooms are cheap — homestays cost ₫400,000–800,000 and pool bungalows ₫1,000,000–2,000,000. A car with driver for Bai Dinh, Van Long or Cuc Phuong costs about ₫1,000,000–1,500,000 a day, so sharing it makes a big difference. Food is cheap, with street meals at ₫40,000–80,000.
When it is cheaper
June to August, the hot and rainy season, and December to February outside Tet usually have lower room prices. Prices rise around Tet, public holidays and the golden-rice weeks in late May and early June.
How to spend less
- Stay overnight in a Tam Coc homestay; many include bicycles.
- Cycle between Tam Coc, Bich Dong and Hang Mua instead of paying for transport.
- Choose one of the two boat trips if your budget is tight; Trang An has fixed prices.
- Bring small notes for the rower's tip (about ₫50,000–100,000) and do not buy drinks and snacks pushed from other boats.
- Share a car and driver with other guests for Bai Dinh, Van Long or Cuc Phuong.
- Visit Bai Dinh, which is free to enter, and skip the electric cart if you are happy to walk.
