How many days in Monemvasia? 3 days, the rock first and then the Laconian coast

By Tony Panopoulos · travel-agency planner in Greece · Updated

Monemvasia is a medieval walled town on the seaward side of a 300-metre-high rock, joined to the Laconian coast by a single causeway. From the mainland you see only the cliff; the town appears when you walk through the gate. Its name means 'single entrance'. Give it three days: one for the rock itself, one for the coast north to Gerakas, and one for Elafonisos, an hour south. Stay inside the walls at least one night: after the day visitors leave, the lanes go quiet.

Short answer

3 days is the sweet spot2 days is the minimum worth it

Two days covers the lower and upper town and one beach. Three days adds Elafonisos or the drive to Gerakas, and an unhurried evening on the walls, which is the best part of a stay.

The 3-day plan, day by day

Day 1: The lower town and Agia Sofia

Morning. Walk 15-20 minutes from Gefyra, the modern village, across the causeway and round the rock, or take the shuttle minibus to the gate. Inside, follow the single main lane to the square with the cathedral of Christos Elkomenos and the old mosque that now houses the small archaeological collection (a few euros). Then climb the stepped path to the upper town, about 20-30 minutes.

Afternoon. The upper town is almost all ruins, with one standing jewel: Agia Sofia, a 12th-century Byzantine church on the edge of the cliff, with the remains of frescoes inside. Walk across the plateau to the fortress at the top for the view along the coast. Back in the lower town, look into the church of Panagia Chrysafitissa near the sea wall.

Evening. Swim from the rocks below the sea wall, where ladders go into the water, then have dinner in the lower town. A meal with local wine costs €20-35 per person. Afterwards walk along the walls in the dark.

The path to the upper town has no shade and polished stones. Go up before 10:00 or after 17:00, in proper shoes, with water.

Day 2: Ritsos, Gefyra and the Gerakas inlet

Morning. Just inside the gate is the house where the poet Yannis Ritsos was born in 1909, marked with a plaque and his bust. Visit a winery near Monemvasia making Malvasia, the sweet wine that took its name from the town and was traded across medieval Europe; tastings cost about €10-20.

Afternoon. Drive about 20 km north to Gerakas, a narrow sea inlet like a small fjord, now a protected wetland, with a fishing hamlet and tavernas on the water. Swim at Pori beach on the way back, a long sand-and-pebble beach just north of Gefyra.

Evening. Eat fish in Gefyra, which is cheaper than inside the walls, then cross the causeway for a drink with the floodlit rock behind you.

Cars cannot enter the old town. Park in the lots along the road to the gate; in August they fill by late morning, so come early or use the shuttle from Gefyra.

Day 3: Day trip to Elafonisos

Morning. Drive about 1 hour south to Pounta, past Neapoli's turn-off, and take the small car ferry to Elafonisos, a 10-minute crossing that runs frequently in summer (about €1-2 per person, more with a car). Most people leave the car and walk on.

Afternoon. Take a taxi or the summer bus 5 km to Simos, a double bay of white sand and turquoise water backed by dunes and cedar trees. Sunbeds cost around €15-25 a set. The neighbouring beach, Sarakiniko, is quieter.

Evening. Have fish in the island's village by the harbour before the ferry back, then drive back to Monemvasia, about 1 hour.

On August weekends the queue at Pounta can be over an hour. Walk on as a foot passenger, or go on a weekday.

Only have 2 days?

With 2 days, do the lower and upper town on Day 1 and choose either Gerakas with Pori beach or Elafonisos on Day 2.

Got extra days?

A 4th day can go to the Kastania cave near Neapoli (about 1 hour, guided visits), or to Mystras, the Byzantine ghost city above Sparta (about 1h30). From Neapoli, a ferry crosses to Kythira in about 1 hour; check current timetables.

Getting around

Monemvasia is about 300 km from Athens, roughly 3h45-4h by car via Tripoli and Sparta, with tolls of about €15-20. KTEL Laconia buses run from Athens Kifisos, usually changing in Sparta, in about 5-6 hours; check current timetables. You need a car for the coast and Elafonisos. Inside the walls everything is on foot, on stone steps; bring luggage you can carry. A shuttle minibus runs between Gefyra and the gate in summer, for about €1-2.

What to eat in Monemvasia

Laconian food is meat, olive oil and greens. Order sygklino, pork smoked and cured with herbs, often cooked with eggs; lalangia, fried strips of dough; and horta with lemon. Local olive oil and Malvasia wine appear on most menus. Fish tavernas in Gefyra and Gerakas serve bream, red mullet and octopus. A taverna meal with wine costs €18-30 per person in Gefyra, a little more inside the walls. Look in the old town's pastry shops for amygdalota, almond sweets scented with rose water.

Best time to visit

April to June and September to October, with highs of 20-28°C and space in the lanes. July and August are hot (32-35°C) on the bare rock, and the town fills with day visitors; climb early. Winter is windy and quiet, with many places closed, but the town is beautiful at Easter, when locals celebrate in the lower town.

Common questions

Can I drive into Monemvasia?

Only to the car parks outside the gate; the old town itself is closed to vehicles, and the lanes are steps and cobbles. Park along the road on the rock, or leave the car in Gefyra and walk or take the summer shuttle. Hotels inside the walls help with luggage.

Is Monemvasia a day trip from Athens?

It is possible but tiring: about 4 hours each way by car. It is better as an overnight stop on a Peloponnese road trip, combined with Mystras, Nafplio or the Mani. The town is at its best in the evening and early morning.

Is the upper town worth the climb?

Yes, if the heat allows. The path takes 20-30 minutes, and at the top you find Agia Sofia, the fortress ruins and the widest view in the area. It is steep and slippery in places. In July and August, go at opening time or in the late afternoon.

Where can I swim in Monemvasia?

From the rocks and ladders below the sea wall of the lower town, at Pori beach just north of Gefyra, and at small coves along the road to Gerakas. For sandy beaches, Elafonisos is about an hour south.
