Where the money goes
Sleeping inside the walls costs the most, from €110–200 in guesthouses to €200–400 in boutique hotels on the sea wall, while Gefyra has rooms from €50–90; Greece adds a per-room, per-night climate resilience fee. A car is needed for the coast and Elafonisos, and the drive from Athens includes tolls of about €15–20. Food is fair, a little more expensive inside the walls than in Gefyra.
When it is cheaper
April, May, early June and October are cheaper than July and August, often noticeably for rooms inside the walls. Easter weekend is busy and priced accordingly.
How to spend less
- Sleep in Gefyra and walk or take the shuttle to the old town.
- Eat fish in Gefyra, which is cheaper than inside the walls.
- Walk onto the Elafonisos ferry as a foot passenger instead of taking the car.
- Swim from the free rocks and ladders below the sea wall.
- Visit on weekdays in August to avoid parking and ferry queues.
- Combine Monemvasia with Mystras or Kythira to make the long drive worth it.
