How many days in Metsovo? 3 days of stone lanes, cheese and the Pindus
By Tony Panopoulos · travel-agency planner in Greece · Updated
Metsovo sits at about 1,150 metres on the slopes of the Pindus, just below the Katara pass that has carried traffic between Epirus and Thessaly for centuries. It is a working town, not a museum: stone houses with slate roofs, older men in the square, smoke from fireplaces, and shops selling cheese and wood carvings. Many local families have Vlach (Aromanian) roots, and you may still hear the language. Give it three days: one in town, one in the forests and lakes to the north, and one for Meteora, about an hour away.
Short answer
Two days covers the town, its two main museums, a cheese and wine tasting and a drive to Lake Aoos. The third day adds Meteora, or a slower walk in the Valia Kalda area of the Pindus National Park.
The 3-day plan, day by day
Day 1: The town: square, museums and a monastery walk
Morning. Start in the main square by the church of Agia Paraskevi, where cafes serve Greek coffee for about €2-3. Walk a few minutes to the Tositsa Mansion, a restored 18th-century-style family house now a folk museum, with carved wooden ceilings, costumes and household objects. Visits are often guided in small groups; allow 45 minutes and check opening days locally.
Afternoon. Visit the Averoff Gallery, founded by Evangelos Averoff-Tositsas, with a strong collection of 19th- and 20th-century Greek painting (entry roughly €3-5). Then walk down the path to the small Monastery of Agios Nikolaos, about 15-20 minutes below the town, with a frescoed church and a quiet courtyard.
Evening. Eat in one of the tavernas around the square: grilled meats, local pies and bean soup, about €15-22 per person with wine. In winter, ask for a table by the fireplace.
Metsovo is steep. The lanes are short but the gradients are real, so wear shoes with grip, and expect icy steps in January and February.
Day 2: Cheese, wine, Lake Aoos and the Pindus forest
Morning. Buy Metsovone, the smoked local cheese, and other mountain cheeses from shops in town or the cheese dairy linked to the Tositsas foundation. Then visit the cellar of Katogi Averoff, the winery that started in Metsovo; tastings usually cost about €10-20 and should be booked in advance.
Afternoon. Drive about 20-25 minutes north to Lake Aoos, a reservoir at roughly 1,300 metres surrounded by pine and beech forest. There are walking tracks along the shore and picnic spots. Continue towards the Valia Kalda area of the Pindus National Park if you have a good car and a map: forest roads, streams and very few people.
Evening. Return to town for dinner. Try kontosouvli (pork roasted on a spit), trahanas soup and wild mushroom dishes in autumn. A glass of local red wine costs about €4-5.
Forest roads around Valia Kalda can be unpaved and closed by snow from late autumn to spring. Ask at your hotel before driving, and do not rely on mobile signal.
Day 3: Day trip to Meteora
Morning. Drive about an hour east on the Egnatia motorway (tolls apply, a few euros each way) to Kalambaka and the monasteries of Meteora, built on sandstone towers. Arrive at 9:00 to visit two monasteries before the tour buses, for example Great Meteoron and Varlaam. Each charges about €3-5 entry and has its own closing day.
Afternoon. Have lunch in Kalambaka or Kastraki (about €15-20 per person), then visit a third monastery such as Roussanou or Agia Triada. Dress code is strict: women need a long skirt (wraps are lent at the gates) and men long trousers.
Evening. Watch the light from the viewpoints on the Meteora road before driving back to Metsovo; allow time in winter, when the Katara area can see fog and ice. Late dinner in town.
Without a car, KTEL buses on the Ioannina-Trikala route stop at Metsovo and Kalambaka, but check times the day before; a guided tour from Kalambaka is simpler.
Only have 2 days?
With 2 days, do the town on Day 1 and combine the cheese and wine stops with Lake Aoos on Day 2. Skip Meteora, or visit it on your way in or out if you are driving between Thessaly and Ioannina.
Got extra days?
A 4th day suits Ioannina, about 45-50 minutes west, with its lake, castle and island village. With more time, continue to the stone villages of Zagori and the Vikos Gorge, about 1.5-2 hours away. In winter, add a ski day at Anilio, the small ski centre above the town.
Where to stay in Metsovo
| Budget | Area | Why | Typical double/night |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budget | Guesthouses below the square | Simple rooms with wooden interiors, a few minutes' walk from the centre. | €50-80 |
| Mid-range | Around the main square | Stone hotels within walking distance of the museums and tavernas; many have fireplaces. | €80-140 |
| Mid-range | Upper town, valley-view rooms | Quieter, with balconies over the gorge and forest; expect a short uphill walk. | €90-150 |
| Comfort | Boutique hotels and spa hotels | Larger rooms, spa facilities and views; best for winter weekends. | €150-280 |
Getting around
The centre is entirely walkable, but steep. A car is the practical way to reach Lake Aoos, Valia Kalda and Meteora. Metsovo is just off the Egnatia Odos (A2): about 45-50 minutes from Ioannina, roughly 1 hour from Kalambaka and about 4.5-5 hours from Athens. The nearest airport is Ioannina. KTEL buses linking Ioannina and Trikala stop in Metsovo a few times a day (roughly €8-12 from Ioannina). Parking in the centre is limited on winter weekends; use the car parks at the edge of town.
What to eat in Metsovo
Metsovo is a cheese and meat town. Taste Metsovone, a smoked cheese shaped like a sausage, often grilled, and metsovela, a semi-hard local cheese. Pies are a big deal in Epirus: kolokithopita (pumpkin pie), hortopita (greens) and kasopita (cheese). Main dishes include slow-cooked lamb, beef with pasta, kontosouvli, bean soup and, in autumn, wild mushrooms. Wines from Katogi Averoff are on most lists. Expect €15-25 per person for a full taverna meal, a little more at weekends. Shops in the square sell cheese, honey and herbal teas to take home.
Best time to visit
September to October for autumn colours, mushrooms and mild days (around 12-20°C), and May to June for green slopes and walking. December to February brings snow and a cosy atmosphere, with Greek families arriving for weekends and Christmas, so book ahead; nights drop well below freezing. July and August are cooler than the lowlands, with highs often around 25°C. The town celebrates the feast of Agia Paraskevi in late July.
What a day costs
| Budget | Mid-range | Comfort | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bed (per person, sharing a double) | €28 | €55 | €110 |
| Food & drink | €22 | €38 | €60 |
| Sights & tickets | €8 | €18 | €35 |
| Local transport | €5 | €20 | €35 |
| Total per person, per day | about €65 | about €130 | about €240 |
Approximate 2026 prices; winter weekends and holidays cost more, and Greece adds a small per-room climate resilience fee to hotel bills.

Common questions
Can I visit Metsovo without a car?
Yes, for the town itself. KTEL buses on the Ioannina-Trikala route stop at Metsovo, and everything in the centre is walkable. Without a car, though, Lake Aoos, the forest roads and Meteora are hard to reach in a day. Local taxis can be hired for short trips, or you can join a tour from Kalambaka for Meteora.
Is Metsovo good in winter?
It is one of the most popular winter towns in Greece. Expect snow on many days from December to February, fires in every taverna, and a busy atmosphere at weekends. Carry snow chains if you drive, check whether the Egnatia motorway and local roads are clear, and book rooms early for Christmas and New Year.
What should I buy in Metsovo?
Cheese is the obvious choice, especially smoked Metsovone, plus local wine, mountain tea, honey and wooden carvings. Shops around the square and on the main street sell all of these. Hard cheeses travel well if vacuum-packed; ask the shop to seal them for your flight.
Is Metsovo worth it if I am visiting Meteora?
Yes, and the two combine well: they are about an hour apart on the Egnatia motorway. Metsovo gives you a cooler mountain base, good food and a living town, while Meteora is the dramatic sight. Many travellers do Meteora on a day trip and spend the evenings in Metsovo.
