Is Metsovo expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Metsovo is moderately priced for Greece: cheaper than the islands in summer, but winter weekends and holidays push room rates up. Expect about €65 a day per person on a tight budget, about €130 mid-range and €240 or more for comfort. Rooms are the main cost; taverna meals and museum tickets are good value.

Where the money goes
Most of the budget goes on the room: simple guesthouses below the square run about €50–80 for a double, stone hotels near the square with fireplaces €80–140, and spa or boutique hotels €150–280, with the top rates on winter weekends, Christmas and New Year. Getting around is the second cost, because Lake Aoos, the Pindus forest and Meteora are realistically reached by car, plus a few euros of Egnatia motorway tolls. Food is fair: a full taverna meal with local wine is about €15–25 per person. Museums are cheap, and the town itself costs nothing to walk.
When it is cheaper
Weekdays outside the holiday periods are the cheapest, as are late spring and early autumn. Prices are highest on snowy winter weekends and over Christmas, New Year and Greek holiday weekends, so check rates for your dates.
How to spend less
- Visit on weekdays rather than weekends, especially in winter, when Greek families fill the hotels.
- Stay in a guesthouse below the square; it is a few minutes' walk from the centre and usually cheaper.
- Do Meteora as a day trip from Metsovo instead of paying for an extra night in Kalambaka.
- Order local pies and bean soup, which cost less than grilled meat dishes and are local specialities.
- Buy cheese, honey and mountain tea in the square shops for picnics at Lake Aoos.
- Use the KTEL bus from Ioannina if you only want to see the town; you do not need a car for the centre.
