Is Metsovo safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Metsovo is a very safe small mountain town, and crime against visitors is rare. The real risks come from the mountains: snow and ice in winter, steep lanes, fog on mountain roads and forest tracks without mobile signal. Pickpocketing and scams are not a concern for most visitors.

The real risks

Ice and snow

From December to February lanes and steps can be icy, and nights fall well below freezing. Wear shoes with grip and walk slowly on steep streets.

Winter driving

Carry snow chains, check whether the Egnatia motorway and local roads are clear, and allow extra time in fog, especially around Katara.

Forest roads

Roads towards Valia Kalda can be unpaved and closed by snow from late autumn to spring. Ask at your hotel before going, carry a map and do not rely on mobile signal.

Walking in the mountains

Weather changes quickly in the Pindus. Carry layers and water, tell someone your route, and turn back if fog comes down.

Parking

On winter weekends the centre fills up; park in the car parks at the edge of town rather than on narrow lanes.

Areas and times to take care

There are no parts of Metsovo that visitors need to avoid. The square, the main street and the lanes are fine to walk in the evening. Take care only on steep, unlit paths after dark, such as the path down to the Monastery of Agios Nikolaos, and on icy steps in winter.

Getting around safely

KTEL buses on the Ioannina–Trikala route stop in Metsovo a few times a day; check times the day before. Local taxis can be hired for short trips. If you drive, the Egnatia motorway is the fastest route, with tolls of a few euros. In winter, rent a car with winter tyres or carry chains.

Solo and women travellers

Metsovo is generally comfortable for solo women, and eating alone in tavernas is normal. The town is quiet in the evening, especially on weekdays. On forest walks or drives to Lake Aoos and Valia Kalda, tell your host your plans and carry a charged phone, as signal is patchy.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is generally safe; ask your host if unsure. The main health issues are cold in winter and slips on ice. Bring warm layers even in summer evenings. Serious medical cases are usually taken to Ioannina, about 45–50 minutes away, so travel insurance is important.

Emergency: 112 (general emergency, works across the EU). Police 100, ambulance 166, fire 199, tourist police 1571.
