How many days in Kos? 4 days of beaches, the Asklepion and island hopping

By Tony Panopoulos · travel-agency planner in Greece · Updated

Kos is the third-largest island of the Dodecanese, close to the Turkish coast, and the birthplace of Hippocrates, the father of medicine. It combines long sandy beaches, flat cycling paths, ancient ruins in the middle of the town, and the mountain villages of Mount Dikeos. Four days covers Kos Town with its Roman ruins and Knights' castle, the Asklepion, the villages and sunset at Zia, the beaches of the south around Kefalos, and a boat trip to the volcano of Nisyros.

The 4-day plan, day by day

Day 1: Kos Town

Morning. See the Tree of Hippocrates, a huge plane tree said to stand where Hippocrates taught (the tree itself is about 500 years old), and the Castle of the Knights of St John (Neratzia) at the harbour. Walk through the Ancient Agora, ruins in the middle of town.

Afternoon. Visit the Western Archaeological Site with Roman mosaics and the Casa Romana, a restored Roman villa with mosaics and courtyards, and the Archaeological Museum with a statue of Hippocrates.

Evening. Cycle or walk along the waterfront and have dinner in the old town lanes.

Kos Town has many bike lanes; rent a bike to get around.

Day 2: The Asklepion and Zia

Morning. Visit the Asklepion (about €8-10), 4 km from town, a healing sanctuary dedicated to Asclepius, where Hippocrates is said to have trained. It rises on three terraces with views to the Turkish coast.

Afternoon. Relax at the hot springs of Therma (Empros Therme), where hot water flows into the sea in a pool of rocks, then drive up to the traditional mountain villages of Asfendiou, Zia and Pyli, with the medieval castle of Old Pyli.

Evening. Watch the sunset from Zia, one of the island's highlights, and have dinner in a taverna with a view.

Zia is busy at sunset; arrive early for a table with a view.

Day 3: The south's beaches

Morning. Drive to the beaches of the south coast: Paradise Beach with bubbles rising from the seabed, Agios Stefanos with the ruins of an early Christian basilica facing the islet of Kastri, and Kefalos Bay.

Afternoon. Visit Kefalos village on the hill, the cave of Aspri Petra, and swim at Kampos or Agios Theologos, a wild beach on the west coast.

Evening. Watch the sunset over the sea at Agios Theologos, and have fish at the beach taverna.

Bring water shoes for pebbly beaches and to protect against sea urchins.

Day 4: Nisyros volcano

Morning. Take a boat from Kardamena or Kos Town to Nisyros (about 1-1.5 hours), then a bus up to the Stefanos crater, where you can walk on the floor of an active volcano, with steaming fumaroles and the smell of sulphur.

Afternoon. Visit the villages of Nikia, on the rim of the caldera, and Mandraki, with its monastery inside a cave and the Venetian castle.

Evening. Return to Kos and have a final dinner.

Wear closed shoes in the crater: the ground is hot and uneven.

Very: sandy beaches with shallow water at Tigaki, Marmari and Kardamena, flat cycling paths and the Lido water park.

Can I visit Turkey from Kos?

Yes: ferries go to Bodrum in about 30-60 minutes. Bring your passport; check whether you need a Turkish visa.

Do I need a car?

It helps for the south's beaches and the mountain villages. Kos Town is walkable and bikeable, and buses connect the main resorts.

Was Hippocrates really from Kos?

Yes: Hippocrates was born on Kos around 460 BC. The Asklepion was built after his death, but it continued the medical tradition of the island.

What are the best beaches?

Agios Stefanos, Paradise Beach and Kefalos Bay in the south, Tigaki and Marmari in the north, and Agios Theologos for wild waves.

Are the Therma hot springs free?

Yes: the natural pool of rocks where hot water meets the sea is free. It is reached by a steep road and short path.

Is Nisyros worth a day trip?

Yes: walking in an active volcanic crater is unique, and the villages are beautiful.

Is Kos expensive?

It is one of the more affordable Greek islands, especially outside July and August.

How do I get to Kos?

By direct flights from many European cities in summer, by plane from Athens (about 1 hour), or by ferry from Piraeus.

Is there nightlife?

Yes: Kos Town has a bar street, and Kardamena has clubs. The rest of the island is quiet.

Is Kos good for cycling?

Yes: the north coast between Kos Town, Tigaki and Marmari is flat, with dedicated bike paths. Many hotels and shops rent bikes and e-bikes. Inland roads to the mountain villages are steep.

What is the Castle of Antimachia?

A large Venetian-era fortress of the Knights of St John in the centre of the island, with walls, gates and two churches inside. It is free and has views over both coasts.

Where can I see the sunset in Kos?

Zia in the mountains is the most famous spot; Agios Theologos and Kefalos on the west coast are quieter, with the sun setting over the open sea.
