Is Kos safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Kos is a very safe island for visitors, with low crime. The real risks are road accidents on scooters and quad bikes, the summer sun and heat, and occasional petty theft on beaches or in busy nightlife areas.

The real risks

Scooters and quad bikes

Accidents are the most common serious problem for visitors. Wear a helmet, drive defensively and avoid riding after drinking.

Sun and heat

July and August reach about 31°C with strong sun; use sunscreen, drink water and avoid midday walks.

Petty theft

Bags left on beaches and phones in busy bars in Kos Town or Kardamena can go missing. Keep valuables with you.

Meltemi wind

In July and August, strong northerly winds can make the sea rough and cancel boat trips; check before swimming on exposed beaches.

Sea urchins and rocks

Wear water shoes on pebbly and rocky beaches.

Areas and times to take care

There are no areas visitors need to avoid. The nightlife strips of Kos Town's 'Bar Street' and Kardamena are lively and loud late at night, where the usual precautions with drinks and belongings apply.

Getting around safely

Taxis are metered or charge fixed fares from the airport; agree the price for long trips. Buses stop in the evening, so plan a taxi for late returns from villages. Cycling is popular in and around Kos Town.

Solo and women travellers

Kos is safe for solo women. Usual precautions apply in nightlife areas: watch your drink, use taxis late at night and keep friends informed. Daytime travel around beaches and villages is relaxed.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is generally safe in Kos Town, but many people drink bottled water. Sun protection is essential in summer. Pharmacies are easy to find, and there is a hospital in Kos Town; EU visitors should bring an EHIC or GHIC.

Emergency: 112
