How many days in Kalavryta? 3 days, by rack railway, cave and mountain

By Tony Panopoulos · travel-agency planner in Greece · Updated

Kalavryta is a mountain town at about 750 metres in northern Achaia, under the slopes of Mount Helmos. For Greeks it carries two heavy pieces of history: the monastery of Agia Lavra is linked with the start of the 1821 War of Independence, and on 13 December 1943 German troops executed the men of the town on the hill now called the Place of Sacrifice. It is also one of the easiest mountain escapes from Athens and Patras, with a narrow rack railway, a cave of stepped underground lakes and a ski centre. Give it three days: the train and the monasteries, the cave and Planitero, and the mountain.

Short answer

3 days is the sweet spot1 day is the minimum worth it

One day is enough for the rack railway, the town and the memorial if you come from Athens early. Three days adds the Cave of the Lakes, the plane-tree springs at Planitero and a day on Helmos, on skis in winter or on foot in summer.

The 3-day plan, day by day

Day 1: The rack railway and Mega Spilaio

Morning. Start at Diakopto on the coast of the Gulf of Corinth and ride the Odontotos, the narrow-gauge rack railway that climbs about 22 km through the Vouraikos gorge, past tunnels, bridges and the river below, in about 1 hour. One-way fares are roughly €10-12; check timetables, which change with the season, and book ahead on weekends.

Afternoon. Get off at Zachlorou, the halfway station, and walk the steep path of about 45-60 minutes up to the monastery of Mega Spilaio ('Great Cave'), built against a huge cliff face; there is also a road. Dress with shoulders and knees covered. Then continue by the next train to Kalavryta.

Evening. Walk around the main square and the pedestrian streets of Kalavryta. The clock on the cathedral of the Dormition is stopped at 2:34, the hour of the 1943 massacre. Dinner in a taverna on the square costs about €15-25 per person.

Arrive at the station 20-30 minutes early to choose a window seat. If you come by car, you can leave it in Kalavryta and do the train down and back.

Day 2: Agia Lavra, the Place of Sacrifice and the Cave of the Lakes

Morning. Drive about 6 km to the monastery of Agia Lavra, where the banner associated with the 1821 uprising is kept in the small museum. The monastery was burned more than once and rebuilt. Then return to town and climb to the Place of Sacrifice (Topos Thysias), a large white cross on the hill where the men of Kalavryta were shot. The site is free and open; visitors are expected to be quiet.

Afternoon. Visit the Museum of the Kalavryta Holocaust, in the old primary school where the women and children were locked on that day. Allow 1-1.5 hours; it is moving and explains the events with documents and personal objects. Then drive about 17 km to the Cave of the Lakes near Kastria, where a guided path follows a chain of small lakes on stone terraces; the tour costs roughly €10-12.

Evening. Eat back in Kalavryta. In cold months, look for tavernas with a fireplace and order slow-cooked goat or lamb with hilopites, the local egg pasta.

The cave is cool all year, about 10-14°C inside. Bring a light jacket even in August.

Day 3: Mount Helmos and Planitero

Morning. In winter, drive about 14 km to the Kalavryta ski centre on Helmos, with lifts up to about 2,300 metres; day passes cost roughly €25-35 and ski rental is available. In summer, use the same road for walks on the mountain; experienced hikers go towards the Mavroneri waterfall, identified with the ancient river Styx, a long and demanding route best done with a local guide.

Afternoon. Drive about 25 km south to Planitero, where springs feed a cold stream under a forest of old plane trees. The trout farms here supply the tavernas along the water, where a grilled trout costs about €10-14.

Evening. Return to Kalavryta, or on the way stop at Lake Tsivlou, a mountain lake formed by a landslide in the early 20th century, roughly 1 hour's drive north-east of town over mountain roads.

Winter weekends, especially at Christmas and Carnival, fill every hotel in Kalavryta. Book weeks ahead or come midweek, when prices drop sharply.

Only have 1 day?

With 1 day, take an early train up from Diakopto, see Mega Spilaio from Zachlorou, the Place of Sacrifice and the museum in town, and the last train down. With 2 days, add Agia Lavra and the Cave of the Lakes.

Got extra days?

With more time, drive to the stone villages of Zarouchla and Peristera on the north side of Helmos, or down to the coast at Aigio and Akrata. Ancient Olympia is about 2 hours by car, and Patras about 1h15.

Getting around

Kalavryta is roughly 190 km from Athens, about 2h30 by car via the Corinth-Patras motorway and the exit for Diakopto or Akrata, then a mountain road. Patras is about 1h15 away. KTEL buses run from Athens and Patras; check current timetables. The Odontotos rack railway links Diakopto with Kalavryta, and the suburban rail line from Athens has been extended along the coast towards Aigio, which may make a car-free trip possible; check the current service. The town itself is on foot, but the cave, Agia Lavra, the ski centre and Planitero need a car or taxi.

What to eat in Kalavryta

This is mountain cooking. Order hilopites, a local egg pasta, with rooster or goat in tomato sauce; lamb and kid on the grill or in the oven; kokoretsi and sausages; and wild greens pies in winter. At Planitero and along the rivers, fresh trout is the speciality. Local cheeses include feta and kefalograviera; honey and jars of mountain tea are sold in the shops on the main street. A taverna meal with house wine costs €15-25 per person. In winter, the cafés serve tsipouro and warm wine.

Best time to visit

December to March for snow and skiing, when the town is busiest on weekends. May, June, September and October are best for walking, with highs of 18-26°C and green slopes. July and August are cooler than the coast (around 28-30°C by day) and nights are fresh. The anniversary of the massacre, 13 December, is a day of official remembrance in the town.

Common questions

Is the Odontotos running every day?

It usually runs daily, with more trains on weekends and holidays, but timetables change with the season and the line is sometimes closed for works. Check the current schedule on the Hellenic Train site or at Diakopto station before planning your day. On Sundays and holidays, buy tickets in advance; the small trains fill up quickly, especially in spring and at Christmas.

What happened in Kalavryta in 1943?

On 13 December 1943, in reprisal for partisan activity in the area, German troops gathered the men and boys of Kalavryta on a hill outside the town and shot them, then burned the town. Several hundred people died. The Place of Sacrifice and the Museum of the Kalavryta Holocaust tell the story. It is a place of mourning for local families, so behave as you would at a cemetery.

Can I visit Kalavryta as a day trip from Athens?

Yes, with an early start. Drive about 2h30 to Diakopto, take a morning train up the gorge, see the town and the memorial, then take an afternoon train down. You will not have time for the Cave of the Lakes or Agia Lavra. Staying one night makes the trip much easier and lets you see the town after the day visitors leave.

Do I need snow chains in winter?

On the road from the coast to Kalavryta and especially up to the ski centre, snow chains are often required after heavy snowfall, and police may check. Rental cars do not always include them, so ask when you book. Roads are usually cleared quickly, but conditions change fast; check the ski centre's daily report before driving up.
