Is Kalavryta expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Kalavryta is moderately priced by Greek standards and cheaper than the islands in summer, but winter weekends, when skiers and visitors from Athens fill the town, can be surprisingly expensive. Expect about €70 a day per person on a tight budget, about €135 mid-range and €265 or more for comfort. Rooms on winter weekends, the ski pass and a car are the main costs.

Where the money goes
Accommodation is the biggest variable: simple guesthouses cost €45–75 midweek, central stone hotels €80–140, and chalets and spa hotels €150–320, with winter weekends, Christmas and Carnival at the top of the range. In winter the ski pass and equipment rental are the next big cost. Food is good value: a full taverna meal with wine is about €15–25 per person. Because the cave, Agia Lavra, the ski centre and Planitero are spread out, a car (or taxis) is a real part of the budget. Greece also charges a per-room, per-night climate resilience fee on top of the room rate.
When it is cheaper
Midweek stays outside the ski season are much cheaper than winter weekends, and prices often drop sharply from Monday to Thursday even in winter. Late spring and early autumn are quiet and usually good value; check rates for your dates.
How to spend less
- Come midweek rather than at the weekend, especially in winter, when room prices drop sharply.
- Leave the car in Kalavryta and do the rack railway down to Diakopto and back, rather than driving the gorge road twice.
- Book the Odontotos ahead on weekends and holidays to avoid a wasted trip.
- Visit the Place of Sacrifice, which is free and open, and the town's squares on foot.
- Eat a full lunch in a taverna and a lighter dinner; portions are generous.
- Avoid Christmas and Carnival weekends unless you are coming for them, as every hotel fills up.
