Free things to do
- The Place of Sacrifice (Topos Thysias) on the hill above the town
- The cathedral of the Dormition, with its clock stopped at 2:34
- Walking the main square and pedestrian streets of Kalavryta
- The walk from Zachlorou station up to the monastery of Mega Spilaio
- The plane-tree forest and springs at Planitero
- Summer walks on the lower slopes of Helmos
Cheap eats
- Hilopites, the local egg pasta, with rooster or goat — a filling taverna main
- Grilled trout at Planitero — about €10–14
- Wild greens pie in winter, from a bakery or taverna
- Grilled lamb or sausages with house wine — about €15–25 per person for a full meal
- Mountain tea and local honey to take home from the shops on the main street
Where to sleep for less
Budget travellers stay in simple guesthouses near the station and the square, at about €45–75 a room (about €25 per person sharing), much cheaper midweek. In summer, Diakopto on the coast is another cheaper base at the bottom of the rack railway.
Getting around cheaply
KTEL buses run from Athens and Patras. The cheapest scenic way up is the Odontotos from Diakopto (roughly €10–12 one way). The town is walkable, but the Cave of the Lakes, Agia Lavra, the ski centre and Planitero need a car or a taxi; sharing a car is the cheapest option for a group.
A sample budget day
- Morning: the Odontotos up the Vouraikos gorge from Diakopto (about €11), with a stop at Zachlorou
- Lunch: hilopites or grilled meat in a taverna on the square (about €15)
- Afternoon: the Place of Sacrifice (free) and the Museum of the Kalavryta Holocaust
- Evening: a simple dinner or a pie and mountain tea in a café
- Total: about €70 including a shared guesthouse room (about €25 per person)
More ways to save
- Pick a weekday for your stay; weekend rates in winter can be double.
- Combine the Cave of the Lakes and Agia Lavra in one drive to save fuel.
- Bring your own ski gear if you have it, or compare rental prices in town and at the ski centre.
- Ask for the house wine by the carafe rather than bottled wine.
- Check whether your rental car includes snow chains before you drive up in winter.
- Visit in May, June, September or October for walking without ski-season prices.
