How many days in Jamaica? 7 days: Montego Bay to Kingston, coast to mountains

By Tony Panopoulos · travel-agency planner in Greece · Updated

Most visitors land in Montego Bay and never leave an all-inclusive. Give Jamaica a week on the road instead, moving west to east: the cliffs of Negril, the quiet south coast, the waterfalls of Ocho Rios, the rainforest coast of Port Antonio, and finally the Blue Mountains and Kingston, the capital of reggae. Roads are slow, so allow about 2-3 hours for each leg.

Short answer

7 days is the sweet spot5 days is the minimum worth it

Five days covers Montego Bay, Negril and Ocho Rios on the north coast. Seven days adds Port Antonio, the Blue Mountains and Kingston.

The 7-day plan, day by day

Day 1: Montego Bay

Morning. Swim at Doctor's Cave Beach on the Hip Strip (Gloucester Avenue), the 1920s bathing club that made MoBay famous (entry about J$1,000-1,500).

Afternoon. Visit Rose Hall Great House, a restored 1770s plantation mansion 20 minutes east, with its 'White Witch' ghost story (tours about J$4,000-5,000).

Evening. Eat jerk chicken at Scotchies, cooked over pimento wood under corrugated iron, for about J$2,000-2,500 a quarter chicken with festival (sweet fried dumplings).

Only use taxis with red PP (public passenger) number plates, and agree the fare before you get in.

Day 2: Negril: Seven Mile Beach and the cliffs

Morning. Drive about 1h30 west to Negril and walk Seven Mile Beach, a long arc of white sand with calm water and small beach bars.

Afternoon. Snorkel from the West End cliffs, where the reef starts at the foot of the limestone, or take a boat to Booby Cay island.

Evening. Watch sunset and the cliff jumpers at Rick's Café (entry about J$3,000-4,000, includes a drink credit), or at a quieter cliff bar such as The Sands.

Beach vendors are persistent; a firm, friendly 'no thanks' works better than ignoring them.

Day 3: South coast: YS Falls, Black River and Treasure Beach

Morning. Drive about 2 hours southeast to YS Falls, seven tiers of waterfalls on a cattle farm with a rope swing and pools (about J$3,000-3,500).

Afternoon. Take a 1-hour Black River boat safari through mangroves to see American crocodiles (about J$4,000), then continue to Treasure Beach, a string of fishing villages.

Evening. Take a boat to the Pelican Bar, a shack on stilts on a sandbar 1 km out to sea, or eat lobster at Jack Sprat on the beach.

Rum fans can stop at the Appleton Estate distillery in the Nassau Valley, 45 minutes inland from Black River.

Day 4: Ocho Rios: Dunn's River Falls and the Blue Hole

Morning. Drive about 3 hours north to Ocho Rios and climb Dunn's River Falls, 180 metres of stepped limestone cascades, holding hands in a human chain with a guide (about J$4,000-5,000). Go early; cruise groups arrive mid-morning.

Afternoon. Swim in the turquoise pools of the Blue Hole (Island Gully Falls) in the hills 20 minutes away (about J$3,000), or ride the bobsled at Mystic Mountain.

Evening. Eat at Ocho Rios' jerk centre or the fish shacks at Fisherman's Beach, then stay in Ocho Rios.

Bring water shoes for Dunn's River; renting them on site costs about J$1,000.

Day 5: Port Antonio and the Blue Lagoon

Morning. Drive about 2h30 east along the coast to Port Antonio, Jamaica's quietest resort town, where Errol Flynn kept his yacht.

Afternoon. Swim in the Blue Lagoon, a deep spring-fed lagoon where cold fresh water meets the sea, then the white-sand cove of Frenchman's Cove (entry about J$1,500-2,500). Or raft the Rio Grande on a bamboo raft (about 2-3 hours).

Evening. Eat jerk pork at Boston Bay, where Jamaican jerk is said to have started, 20 minutes east.

Reach Falls, 45 minutes further east, is a beautiful waterfall in the rainforest with guided climbs, and much quieter than Dunn's River.

Day 6: The Blue Mountains

Morning. Drive about 2 hours into the Blue Mountains towards Kingston. Visit a coffee farm such as Craighton Estate (tours about J$4,000), where some of the world's most expensive coffee grows at 900-1,500 metres.

Afternoon. Walk a short trail in the Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park, a UNESCO site, around Holywell, with views to Kingston and the sea (about J$1,000 entry).

Evening. Stay in a mountain lodge, or descend 40 minutes to Kingston for dinner in New Kingston.

Serious hikers climb Blue Mountain Peak (2,256 metres) overnight from Penlyne to see sunrise; go with a guide and a 4x4 transfer.

Day 7: Kingston: Bob Marley and Port Royal

Morning. Visit the Bob Marley Museum at 56 Hope Road, his home and Tuff Gong studio (tours about US$30, paid in J$ or US$), then Devon House, an 1881 mansion famous for its ice cream.

Afternoon. See the National Gallery of Jamaica downtown, or drive 30 minutes to Port Royal, the 'wickedest city on earth' of the pirates, largely sunk by the 1692 earthquake, with Fort Charles.

Evening. Go to a sound system street dance such as Rae Town on Sunday nights, with a local guide, or have fish and festival at Hellshire Beach before your flight.

Fly out from Kingston's Norman Manley Airport, 30 minutes from the centre, to avoid driving back to Montego Bay (about 3-4 hours).

Only have 5 days?

With 5 days, stay on the north and west coasts: Montego Bay, Negril, the south coast day and Ocho Rios, flying home from Montego Bay. You lose Port Antonio, the Blue Mountains and Kingston.

Got extra days?

Extra days fit Nine Mile, Bob Marley's birthplace and mausoleum in the hills of St Ann, more time in Treasure Beach or Port Antonio, or the Cockpit Country, a karst landscape of limestone hills and caves.

Getting around

For a road trip, rent a car (about J$8,000-14,000 a day) or hire a driver. Drive on the left; roads are often potholed, and driving at night is best avoided. The Knutsford Express coach links Montego Bay, Negril, Ocho Rios and Kingston comfortably (MoBay-Kingston about 4 hours, roughly J$4,000-5,000). Shared route taxis cost much less but are crowded. Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay and Norman Manley in Kingston are the two main airports.

What to eat in Jamaica

Start with ackee and saltfish, the national dish, with fried dumplings and callaloo, for J$1,500-2,500 at a local café. Jerk chicken or pork, rubbed with scotch bonnet and pimento and smoked over pimento wood, is everywhere. Try curry goat, oxtail with butter beans, escovitch fish with bammy (cassava bread) and a beef patty in coco bread for J$400-600. Drink Red Stripe beer, rum punch, fresh coconut water and sorrel at Christmas. Blue Mountain coffee is sold everywhere, but check it is 100%.

Best time to visit

December to April is dry and sunny, around 27-30°C, and the most expensive season. May to November is hotter and wetter, with short afternoon showers, and hurricane season runs from June to November, peaking in August to October. Rates fall by 30-50% in summer. Reggae Sumfest in Montego Bay is in July.

Common questions

Is it safe to drive around Jamaica?

It is possible, but take care. Roads are narrow and winding, with potholes and fast local drivers, and road signs are sparse. Drive on the left, avoid driving after dark, and keep doors locked in towns. If you are nervous, use the Knutsford Express between towns and hire local drivers for day trips.

Is Jamaica safe for tourists?

Most visits are trouble-free, but crime levels are high in parts of Kingston and Montego Bay. Stay in tourist areas at night, do not walk alone after dark in cities, use licensed red-plate taxis and do not flash valuables. People will offer marijuana and tours constantly; polite refusal is enough. Treasure Beach and Port Antonio feel the most relaxed.

Which is better, Negril or Ocho Rios?

Negril for the long sandy beach, sunsets and a laid-back mood. Ocho Rios for waterfalls, rivers and activities, though its beaches are smaller and it is busy on cruise days. On a week-long trip, stay a night or two in each and finish further east in Port Antonio.

Can I visit Bob Marley's birthplace?

Yes. Nine Mile, in the hills of St Ann about 1h15 from Ocho Rios, has his birthplace, childhood home and the mausoleum where he is buried. Tours cost about US$25-30 and are led by Rastafarian guides. It fits as a half-day from Ocho Rios; combine it with the Bob Marley Museum in Kingston for the full story.
