Where the money goes
Accommodation is the biggest variable: simple cottages in Negril's West End or Treasure Beach cost about J$9,000–16,000, small hotels in Ocho Rios, Port Antonio or New Kingston J$18,000–35,000, and all-inclusive resorts J$55,000–150,000, plus 10% GCT and a small room tax. Attractions are often priced in US dollars and are expensive relative to local wages. Getting around by rental car, private driver or the Knutsford Express is the third major cost; route taxis are much cheaper but crowded. Local food from jerk centres and cookshops is good value.
When it is cheaper
From about mid-April to mid-December, rates typically fall by 30–50% compared with the December–April peak, though this is also the wetter season and includes hurricane months.
How to spend less
- Eat at jerk centres, cookshops and patty shops rather than resort restaurants.
- Use the Knutsford Express or route taxis between towns instead of private transfers.
- Visit Dunn's River Falls early, before cruise groups, and bring your own water shoes rather than renting them.
- Choose Reach Falls or the Blue Hole as quieter, cheaper alternatives to big attractions.
- Travel between May and November for lower room rates, avoiding the peak hurricane weeks.
- Check whether a price is in US or Jamaican dollars before agreeing, and pay in J$ where the rate is better.
