How many days in Chicago? 3 days of architecture, museums, blues and deep dish
By Tony Panopoulos · travel-agency planner in Greece · Updated
Chicago is the city that invented the skyscraper, rebuilt after the Great Fire of 1871 into an open-air museum of architecture, and its lakefront is lined with parks and beaches. Three days covers the Loop and the river by boat, Millennium Park and the Art Institute, the Museum Campus on Lake Michigan, and the neighbourhoods north of the river, with evenings of blues, jazz and deep-dish pizza. Come between May and October: Chicago winters are bitterly cold.
Short answer
Two days covers the river cruise, Millennium Park, the Art Institute and a skyscraper view. The third adds the Museum Campus, Lincoln Park and Wrigleyville.

The 3-day plan, day by day
Day 1: The river, the Loop and Millennium Park
Morning. Take the Chicago Architecture Center river cruise (about US$55-65, 75-90 minutes), widely considered the best tour in the city: volunteer guides explain 40+ buildings along the three branches of the Chicago River, from the Wrigley Building to Marina City.
Afternoon. Walk the Chicago Riverwalk, then Millennium Park (free): Anish Kapoor's Cloud Gate ('the Bean'), the Crown Fountain with faces of Chicagoans, and Frank Gehry's Jay Pritzker Pavilion, with free summer concerts.
Evening. Go up the Willis Tower Skydeck (about US$35-40) on the 103rd floor and step onto The Ledge, a glass box 412 metres above the street, at sunset. Dinner with deep-dish pizza at Lou Malnati's or Giordano's (allow 40 minutes to bake).
For a view with a drink instead of a ticket, the Signature Room has closed, but the bar at 360 Chicago (John Hancock Center) and several hotel rooftops offer the skyline for the price of a cocktail.
Day 2: The Art Institute and the Museum Campus
Morning. The Art Institute of Chicago (about US$32-35) holds Seurat's A Sunday on La Grande Jatte, Hopper's Nighthawks, Grant Wood's American Gothic and one of the largest Impressionist collections outside Paris. Allow 3 hours.
Afternoon. Walk along the lakefront through Grant Park past Buckingham Fountain to the Museum Campus: the Field Museum (with SUE, the most complete T. rex skeleton), the Shedd Aquarium and the Adler Planetarium, whose lawn has the best skyline view in the city.
Evening. Have dinner in the West Loop's Restaurant Row on Randolph Street, then live blues at Buddy Guy's Legends in the South Loop.
Choose one of the Museum Campus museums per visit; each takes 2-3 hours. A CityPASS can save money if you visit several.
Day 3: Magnificent Mile, Lincoln Park and Wrigleyville
Morning. Walk the Magnificent Mile on Michigan Avenue past the Chicago Water Tower (one of the few buildings to survive the 1871 fire) to Oak Street Beach, then along the lakefront path.
Afternoon. Visit Lincoln Park Zoo (free) and the Lincoln Park Conservatory, then walk through Old Town or take the L to Wrigleyville for a tour of Wrigley Field (1914), the ivy-covered home of the Cubs, or a game from April to September.
Evening. Hear jazz at the Green Mill in Uptown, a speakeasy-era club once frequented by Al Capone's associates, or comedy at The Second City in Old Town, where many American comedians started.
Navy Pier has a Ferris wheel and boat departures, but it is crowded and touristy; the lakefront trail is the better walk.
Only have 2 days?
With 2 days, do Days 1 and 2. You lose the north side neighbourhoods and the jazz clubs.
Got extra days?
With more time, take the train to Oak Park (about 20 minutes on the Green Line) for Frank Lloyd Wright's Home and Studio and the streets of his Prairie-style houses, or visit Hyde Park for the University of Chicago and the Museum of Science and Industry.
Where to stay in Chicago
| Budget | Area | Why | Typical double/night |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budget | South Loop | Cheaper hotels, near the Museum Campus and the L. | US$140-220 |
| Mid-range | The Loop / River North | Walk to Millennium Park, the river and restaurants. | US$200-350 |

Getting around
The L elevated trains and CTA buses cover the city; tap a contactless card or Ventra card (about US$2.25-2.50 a ride). From O'Hare, the Blue Line reaches the Loop in about 45 minutes for about US$5; from Midway, the Orange Line takes about 25 minutes. Walking along the river and the lakefront is a pleasure; Divvy bike-share stations are everywhere.
What to eat in Chicago
Chicago's three classics are deep-dish pizza, the Chicago-style hot dog (all-beef, poppy-seed bun, mustard, onions, relish, tomato, pickle, sport peppers and celery salt, and never ketchup) and the Italian beef sandwich, dipped in its juice, at Al's #1 or Portillo's. Try tavern-style thin-crust pizza, which locals eat more often than deep dish, and the Mexican food of Pilsen. Chicago also has some of the best fine dining in the US, especially in the West Loop. Tip 18-20%.
Best time to visit
May to October: summer highs of 26-29°C, beaches on Lake Michigan, festivals and baseball; September and early October are often the most pleasant. Winter (December to February) is very cold, often below -10°C with wind off the lake, but hotels are cheap and the museums are quiet. The lakefront is beautiful in autumn.

Common questions
Which river cruise should I take?
The Chicago Architecture Center's First Lady cruise is the best known, with expert volunteer docents. Shorter, cheaper cruises exist, but the commentary quality varies.
Willis Tower or 360 Chicago?
Willis Tower is higher and has The Ledge; 360 Chicago has a lake view and the TILT experience. One is enough.
Is Chicago safe for tourists?
The Loop, River North, the lakefront and the north side neighbourhoods are generally safe. As in any big city, stay aware at night and on quiet train platforms.
Is deep-dish pizza worth it?
Yes, once: it is more like a pie than a pizza. Order one for two or three people, and expect a 40-minute wait while it bakes.
Is CityPASS worth it in Chicago?
If you plan the Skydeck, the Shedd Aquarium and the Field Museum, it usually saves money. It does not include the Art Institute's full ticket in every version.
Are the beaches on Lake Michigan really swimmable?
Yes, from about late May to early September, when lifeguards are on duty. North Avenue Beach and Oak Street Beach are the most central; the water is cold until July and the city posts swimming advisories after storms.
