Is Chicago safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Most visitors to Chicago have no problems: the Loop, River North, the Magnificent Mile, Lincoln Park and the lakefront are busy and generally safe. The city's well-publicised violent crime is concentrated in specific residential neighbourhoods away from the tourist areas. Realistic risks for visitors are phone snatching, pickpocketing and occasional robberies at night.

The real risks

Phone and bag snatching

Happens on the L and around busy stations; keep phones away from train doors and bags closed.

Theft from cars

Do not leave anything visible in parked cars.

Late-night transit

Some trains are nearly empty late at night; ride in the first car near the operator or take a rideshare.

Winter weather

Wind chill off the lake can be dangerous in January and February; dress in proper layers.

Lake Michigan swimming

Swim only at guarded beaches; rip currents and cold water can be dangerous.

Areas and times to take care

Stay alert in quieter parts of the Loop late at night after offices close, and around some stations after dark. Most visitors do not need to go to the neighbourhoods where violent crime is concentrated; ask locally before exploring unfamiliar areas at night.

Getting around safely

The L and buses are fine by day and evening. Late at night, Uber, Lyft and taxis are the easiest option. The Blue and Red Lines run 24 hours but can be quiet overnight.

Solo and women travellers

Chicago is generally comfortable for women travelling alone in the central areas. Use rideshare late at night, watch your drink in bars, and choose hotels in the Loop, River North or Streeterville, which are busy in the evening.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is safe. Summers can be hot and humid (27°C highs and heat waves above that), while winter is very cold, often below -10°C with wind. Healthcare is excellent but expensive, so travel insurance is essential.
