How many days in Bled? 3 days: the lake, Vintgar Gorge and Bohinj
By Tony Panopoulos · travel-agency planner in Greece · Updated
Bled is a resort town on a glacial lake at the edge of the Julian Alps, with a church on an island, a castle on a 130-metre cliff and mountains behind. The lake is only about 2 km long, and a walk around it takes under two hours, so many people visit for a single afternoon from Ljubljana. Give it three days: one for the lake, one for Vintgar Gorge and the viewpoints, and one for the larger, wilder Lake Bohinj, 26 km away inside Triglav National Park.
Short answer
Two days covers the island, the castle, the lake loop and Vintgar Gorge. A third day adds Lake Bohinj, the Savica waterfall and a cable car ride up Vogel for a view of the Julian Alps.
The 3-day plan, day by day
Day 1: The island, the castle and the lake loop
Morning. Take a pletna, the traditional flat-bottomed wooden boat rowed standing, from the jetty at Mlino or the main beach to Bled Island (about €18-20 per person return, around 20 minutes each way, with about 30-40 minutes on the island). Climb the 99 stone steps to the Church of the Assumption and ring the wishing bell (church entry about €12-15).
Afternoon. Walk the lake loop, about 6 km on a flat path that takes 1.5-2 hours, past the villas of the north shore and the swimming areas. Then climb the path to Bled Castle (about €17-20), the oldest castle in Slovenia, first mentioned in 1011, with a museum, a printing workshop and a terrace over the lake.
Evening. Have dinner in the town centre or by the lake; a main course costs about €15-25. Then try the Bled cream cake (kremsnita), layers of custard and cream between pastry, served at the lakeside cafes for about €5-6.
Rowing boats can also be rented by the hour (about €20-30) at the beaches, so you can reach the island yourself. Pletna boats leave when full, so expect a short wait in quiet hours.
Day 2: Vintgar Gorge and the Ojstrica viewpoint
Morning. Go early to Vintgar Gorge, about 4 km north of Bled, where wooden walkways run about 1.6 km along the emerald Radovna river between cliffs up to 100 metres high (about €10-15; buy a timed ticket online in summer). The walk is one-way and takes 1-1.5 hours, ending at the Sum waterfall, about 13 metres high. Summer shuttle buses and taxis run from Bled.
Afternoon. Back at the lake, climb to the Ojstrica viewpoint above the western end, about 20-30 minutes up a steep forest path from the road, for the classic view of the island with the castle behind. Continue 15 minutes to Mala Osojnica for a higher view, using the ladders carefully.
Evening. Swim at the lake's public beaches in summer, when the water reaches about 22-24°C, then have dinner at a gostilna, a traditional inn, in the villages around the lake, about €15-22 per main.
Vintgar Gorge is closed in winter (usually from about November to March) and on very rainy days. Check the official website before you go.
Day 3: Lake Bohinj, the Savica waterfall and Vogel
Morning. Take the bus or drive about 35 minutes to Lake Bohinj, the largest permanent lake in Slovenia, about 4 km long. Start at Ribcev Laz, with the stone bridge and the small Church of St John the Baptist, painted with medieval frescoes. Walk or take the bus to the trailhead of the Savica waterfall, where some 550 steps lead to the 78-metre fall (about €4-5).
Afternoon. Take the Vogel cable car (about €25-30 return) up to about 1,535 metres for a wide view over Lake Bohinj and Triglav, Slovenia's highest mountain at 2,864 metres. In summer, swim in the cold, clear lake or rent a kayak or stand-up paddle board at Ribcev Laz.
Evening. Return to Bled for dinner, or stop in Radovljica, a small medieval town 7 km from Bled with a beekeeping museum and old inns, before ending the evening by the lake.
Bohinj is in a national park: swim only in the marked areas, keep to the paths and avoid the narrow lakeside road by car in July and August.
Only have 2 days?
With 2 days, do Day 1 as written and Vintgar Gorge with Ojstrica on Day 2. You lose Lake Bohinj, which is the bigger loss for nature lovers.
Got extra days?
A 4th day can go over the Vrsic Pass to the Soca valley (summer only, with 50 hairpin bends), to the Pokljuka plateau for hiking, or to Ljubljana, about 55 km away, for a day in the capital.

Getting around
Bled is about 55 km from Ljubljana: buses take about 1 hour 15 minutes and cost about €7, with departures at least hourly. Ljubljana airport is about 35 minutes by car. The nearest main train station is Lesce-Bled, 4 km away, linked by bus and taxi; the smaller Bled Jezero station is on the scenic Bohinj line. Around the lake you walk. Buses run to Bohinj, and a summer shuttle serves Vintgar; check current timetables. Parking near the lake is limited and paid.
What to eat in Bled
The Bled cream cake, kremsnita, was created in the 1950s and is now sold all over town. Slovenian mountain food is hearty: struklji (rolled dumplings with cottage cheese or tarragon), ajdovi zganci (buckwheat porridge) with sour milk, kranjska klobasa (Carniolan sausage) and jota, a bean and sauerkraut soup. From the lakes and rivers come trout, grilled or baked. Drink Slovenian wines and local beer. A gostilna meal costs about €18-28 per person; lunch menus in town are cheaper, around €12-15.
Best time to visit
May-June and September, with 18-25°C, green meadows and fewer crowds. July and August are warm (25-28°C) and the busiest, with the lake water good for swimming. October brings autumn colours. In winter, the lake is cold and quiet, sometimes with snow on the castle and Advent markets in December; Vintgar is closed.

Common questions
Is Bled worth more than a day trip from Ljubljana?
Yes. In a day trip you can see the island and the castle, but staying lets you see the lake early and in the evening, when the day groups leave, walk to Vintgar Gorge before the crowds, and visit Lake Bohinj, which is far less busy. Two or three nights is ideal, and Ljubljana is only about 1 hour 15 minutes by bus.
Can I swim in Lake Bled?
Yes, in summer. The water reaches about 22-24°C in July and August, and there are public bathing areas with entry fees as well as free spots around the shore. Lake Bohinj is colder and clearer. Swim only in permitted areas and do not swim out to the island, where boat traffic is busy.
Do I need to book Vintgar Gorge?
In summer, yes, it is strongly recommended. Tickets are sold online for timed entry slots to control numbers, and mid-morning slots fill up. The gorge is one-way, so you walk back by a forest path or take the shuttle. It is closed in winter, roughly from November to March, and after heavy rain.
Is Bled good for families?
Very. The lake loop is flat and suits pushchairs, the pletna boat ride is popular with children, and in summer the Straza hill has a toboggan run and adventure park. Lakeside swimming areas have shallow water. Vintgar Gorge is easy but narrow, and the Ojstrica path is steep, so it is less suitable for small children.
