Is Namibia expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Namibia is moderately expensive for a self-drive safari: groceries and fuel are reasonably priced, but car hire and lodges in and near the parks are costly, so a mid-range day averages about N$3,500 per person. It is usually cheaper than safaris in Botswana or Tanzania, especially if you camp.

Where the money goes
Transport and accommodation dominate: a 4x4 or high-clearance car with two spare tyres costs about N$1,200–2,500 a day, more with a rooftop tent, plus fuel over long distances. Lodges near Sossusvlei and Etosha range from simple government rest-camp chalets at N$2,000–4,500 to private lodges at many times that, usually with dinner included. Park fees are modest. Supermarket food (Spar, Pick n Pay, Checkers) is reasonably priced, so self-catering and camping can make Namibia surprisingly affordable.
When it is cheaper
November to April (the green, hot season) brings lower lodge and car-hire rates, often 20–40% below the July–October peak. The South African school holidays (late June–July and December) push prices up and fill park camps.
How to spend less
- Camp in a rooftop tent at park campsites instead of staying in lodges.
- Book NWR government camps inside Etosha and Sesriem early; they are cheaper than private lodges outside.
- Self-cater with groceries from Windhoek or Swakopmund supermarkets.
- Share the rental car with other travellers to split the biggest cost.
- Travel in the shoulder months of May or November for lower rates.
- Fill the tank at every town to avoid detours; fuel itself is reasonably priced.
