Namibia on a budget: how to do it well
Short answer
Namibia on a budget is possible at about N$1,600 per person per day by camping and sharing a 4x4. Self-catering and government park campsites keep costs low; lodges are what make trips expensive.

Free things to do

- Swakopmund's jetty, beachfront and German colonial streets
- Floodlit waterholes at Etosha rest camps for overnight guests
- Stargazing in one of the darkest skies on Earth
Cheap eats
- Braai (barbecue) of supermarket boerewors at your campsite: about N$60–100 per person

- Pie or vetkoek from a bakery: about N$20–40
- Apple crumble at Solitaire: about N$50–70

Where to sleep for less
Budget travellers camp at sites inside Etosha and Sesriem (N$400–900 per site) or stay in backpacker hostels in Windhoek and Swakopmund. Rooftop-tent car hire combines vehicle and bed.
Getting around cheaply
A shared 4x4 rental is the cheapest way to see the parks. Intercity buses (such as Intercape) link Windhoek with Swakopmund and South Africa but do not reach the parks. Budget small-group camping tours are an alternative to self-drive.
