Is Ecuador expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Mainland Ecuador is one of the cheaper countries in South America: a budget day is about $40 per person and a mid-range day about $110, in US dollars, which Ecuador uses as its currency. The Galápagos are a different story, with a $200 national park fee per foreign adult and cruise or island-hopping prices far above the mainland.

Where the money goes
On the mainland, the budget goes mostly on accommodation and tours: hostels and family guesthouses cost about $25–45 a double, colonial mansion hotels in Quito $70–130 and highland haciendas $90–180. Buses are very cheap, while guided trips to Cotopaxi or private transfers to Quilotoa add more. Food is excellent value at markets and set-lunch restaurants (almuerzos). The Galápagos alone can cost more than the rest of the trip: flights from Quito or Guayaquil, the $200 park fee, a transit card, and boat tours or a cruise.
When it is cheaper
Mainland prices change little by season. In the Galápagos, the quieter months (roughly May–June and September–November, outside holiday periods) can bring better last-minute cruise deals; July–August and Christmas–New Year are the most expensive.
How to spend less
- Eat the almuerzo, a set lunch of soup, main and juice, usually a few dollars.
- Travel by long-distance bus from the main terminals (Quitumbe for the south, Carcelén for the north).
- Use Uber or metered yellow taxis in Quito instead of hotel cars.
- Book Galápagos day trips on the islands rather than a full cruise if you are on a tight budget.
- Visit the free museums and parks, such as the Museo Pumapungo in Cuenca and El Cajas National Park.
- Bring small dollar notes; $20 bills can be hard to change, and $50 and $100 notes are often refused.
