Prague or Vienna? An honest comparison
The short answer
Pick Prague for a cheaper, more compact old town, beer culture and a castle-and-bridges skyline. Pick Vienna for palaces, classical music, coffee houses and a calmer, more polished city, at a higher cost (about €198 a day mid-range against about 4,120 CZK, roughly €165, in Prague).
Prague: suits couples, first-timers and photographers who want a walkable medieval centre and good beer at fair prices.
Vienna: suits couples and solo travellers who want museums, opera, imperial palaces and café culture in a calm, orderly city.

Common questions
Is Prague or Vienna cheaper?
Prague. Our mid-range estimate is about 4,120 CZK per person per day, roughly €165, against about €198 in Vienna. Beer and meals in local pubs are clearly cheaper in Prague, though prices around Old Town Square are close to Viennese levels. Vienna hotels and sit-down dinners cost more.
When is the best time to visit?
September is our pick for Prague and July for Vienna. Both cities peak around 26 to 28°C in July and drop to about 4 to 5°C in January. September is a good compromise for a combined trip: warm enough for walking, with fewer crowds than midsummer in Prague's centre.
Which is better for a first trip to Central Europe?
Prague if you want a compact, atmospheric old town and lower prices; most sights are within walking distance. Vienna if you care more about museums, palaces and music, and want a calmer pace. Since they are only about 4 h apart by train, many first-timers do both.
How do I get between Prague and Vienna?
Direct trains run several times a day between Praha hlavní nádraží and Wien Hauptbahnhof, taking about 4 hours. Long-distance buses take about 4 to 4 h 30 and can be cheaper. Flying makes little sense on this route once airport time is added. Check current timetables and book ahead for lower fares.
