Naples or Venice? An honest comparison
The short answer
Pick Venice for a short, romantic trip to a city of canals with no cars, where two or three nights are enough. Pick Naples for pizza, a lively and sometimes chaotic old town, and Pompeii, Vesuvius and the Amalfi Coast nearby — at a much lower cost, about €175 a day mid-range against €220 in Venice. They are at opposite ends of Italy, so combining them works best with Rome or Florence in between.
Naples: suits solo travellers, friends and backpackers who want street food, ancient sites and coastline at a lower price.
Venice: suits couples, honeymooners and photographers who want canals, palaces and quiet walks after the day-trippers leave.

Common questions
Is Naples or Venice cheaper?
Naples, by a clear margin. Our mid-range estimate is about €175 per person per day in Naples against €220 in Venice. Venice's hotels are expensive because space is limited, and restaurants near the main sights charge high prices. In Naples, a classic pizza or street food lunch costs very little, and hotels are cheaper.
How long does it take to travel from Naples to Venice?
About 5 h to 5 h 30 on direct high-speed trains, which stop at Rome, Florence and Bologna on the way. A direct flight takes about 1 h 15, but add airport time and a bus or water bus from Venice Marco Polo into the city. The train is often just as practical, and you can break the trip in Florence.
Which is better for a short break?
Venice works best for two or three nights, as the city is small and the experience is about walking, canals and evenings. Naples needs more time if you want Pompeii and the coast, ideally four days or more. For a romantic weekend, choose Venice; for food and history on a budget, choose Naples.
Do I need to pay a fee to enter Venice?
Overnight visitors pay a tourist tax through their hotel. Day visitors may also need to pay an access fee on certain peak days, introduced in recent years. Rules and dates change, so check the official City of Venice website before you travel. If you are staying overnight, you are usually exempt from the day fee but may need to register.
