Best time to visit Venice: month by month

Short answer

April–May and September–October are the best months, with average highs of about 15–25°C. Summer is hot and humid (about 26–29°C) and very crowded, and Carnival in February is spectacular but the most expensive time. Winter is quiet and cheap, with highs of about 8–9°C and occasional acqua alta.

Season by season

Spring (Mar–May)

Highs of about 13°C in March, 15°C in April and 21°C in May, with 4–13 rainy days a month. Crowds rise quickly from Easter.

Summer (Jun–Aug)

Highs of about 26–29°C and lows of 19–21°C, humid, with 6–9 rainy days a month, often thunderstorms. The busiest time; the Redentore festival is in July.

Autumn (Sep–Nov)

September is warm at about 25°C and October about 20°C; November cools to about 13°C, with about 12 rainy days and the start of the acqua alta season.

Winter (Dec–Feb)

Highs of about 8–9°C and lows of 1–2°C, often foggy. December and January are quiet and cheap; February brings Carnival and its crowds.

When to avoid

July and August if you dislike heat, humidity and crowds, and peak weekends when day-trippers must pay the access fee. Carnival is unforgettable but hotels can cost several times their usual price.
